We are the country's sole supplier of sufficient and safe blood and blood products. We train specialists in transfusion medicine and produce research products, to maintain and improve the health of our society. Responsibilities: • Formulation of standards of blood collection, screening, preparation, storage, and delivery of blood and blood components, based on WHO recommendations and scientific evidence. • Recruitment and maintenance of voluntary donors through educational and non-commercial promotional activities; • Development of a blood supply network and blood collection centers across the country; • Promotion of national self-sufficiency in blood and plasma derivatives; • Conducting high-qualified tests on donors and donated blood to ensure blood safety; • Preparing blood components and delivering blood and its components to authorized health centers; • Holding training programs for health professionals involved in the administration of blood and blood components; • Applying the best to preserve the dignity and safety of blood donors;

The 5th International Transfusion Medicine Congress The 5th International Transfusion Medicine Congress was held on May 14-16, 2024 at Espinas Palace Hotel in Tehran, Iran. About 400 experts from the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO), students and faculty members of the High Institute for Research and Education in Transfusion Medicine, and 30 participants from 16 foreign countries (Egypt, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Syria, Jordan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Turkey, Libya, Oman, Iraq, Cuba, Venezuela and Lebanon) have attended this congress. The event featured virtual presentations from 8 international scientific experts, from Switzerland, France, Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Denmark, Spain, and Italy. Additionally, three speakers from Nepal, Egypt, and Oman joined the event in person. The foreign guests visited the central headquarters of the IBTO as well as the Tehran blood donation center and got acquainted with the technical departments, including the immunohematology laboratory, coagulation laboratory, cord blood bank, research center, freezing department, and HLA laboratory. At the Tehran Blood Transfusion Center, the guests were introduced to the methods of blood donor interview, collection, processing, screening tests, and quality control of blood and blood products. At the opening of this congress, Dr. Mustafa Jamali, Managing Director of the IBTO, delivered a speech and highlighted Iran's achievement as a model national blood transfusion organization, which will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in August. Dr. Jamali emphasized that last year, over 2.3 million units of blood were donated in our country, marking a milestone with a blood donation index of 27.3 per thousand for the first time. Notably, the demand for blood and blood products at medical centers has reached 100% of the national average, up from 90% in previous years.
