Congratulations to Northern Lights on launching the World’s First Commercial CO₂ Transport and Storage Service! 🙌 Just a few days ago, on September 26th, the Northern Lights JV officially inaugurated its CO₂ receiving facilities in Øygarden, Norway—an achievement that marks a pivotal moment for the global CCS community. This milestone sets a powerful example of how collaboration and commitment can pave the way for innovative solutions to address our shared climate challenges. The launch of these state-of-the-art facilities proves that large-scale CO₂ transport and storage is not just a concept but a reality that can significantly contribute to achieving Europe's climate goals. We at Carbfix are inspired by this development and look forward to contributing further through our own Carbfix Coda Terminal project, which will expand the storage capacity and reach of European CCS efforts. As we reflect on Northern Lights’ success, we are reminded of the vital role that each CCS project plays in creating a robust value chain for CO₂ management—making large-scale decarbonization possible. We are excited about the future and ready to continue advancing CCS with partners across Europe! https://lnkd.in/duumvTXP #CCS #CarbonCapture #CarbonStorage #ClimateAction #EnergyTransition #Sustainability #NorthernLights #Carbfix #CodaTerminal

Research Analyst @ Carbon Containment Lab | Yale Environmental Science Alum

It was wonderful to be back in Reykjavík for this year's Carbfix Mineralization Summit! I got to meet and chat with some of my climate-tech heroes in person, visit the injection wells I discussed in my Yale graduation thesis, tour the impressive Mammoth DAC plant of Climeworks, and even see the aurora skies! 🌌 In my speech during the summit, I focused on how we can use the CDR toolkit in a socially responsible way through transparent dialogue and deep collaboration with environmental advocacy groups and local communities. The communication piece can make or break any large-scale carbon mineralization project; that's why this is one of the greatest focus areas for every project we are working on at the Carbon Containment Lab. I also talked about the importance of giving climate activists a seat at the decision-making table and intentionally focusing on training the next generation of CDR scientists and policy-makers. Thank you Carbfix, for giving me a seat at the table! #CarbfixSummit24 #CarbonRemoval #CCS #CDR #ClimateAction

I want to thank Carbfix and Kári Helgason for inviting me to attend their Mineralisation Summit. After 15 years in this CCS game, it was great to meet new faces, fresh ideas and novel thinking. This space is exciting. I learned much about the progress achieved in direct air capture and carbon mineralisation. On the latter, I am excited about how this storage type is evolving rapidly. I see carbon mineralisation as an additional option to CO2 storage; it should not be considered an alternative. The science and the technology are there; now, it is all about scale-up and commercialisation. Those in the room can learn much from those who have come before them, perhaps not the geology or the technology (although it couldn’t hurt), but the big barriers to deployment – scale-up of technology and commercialisation, engagement with decision-makers, regulators, and the community. There is a lot of research out there, and as I always say, CCS has been overthought and underdone—hundreds of thousands of hours of research and thinking. I will finish on my final slide during my keynote on lessons learnt: Knowledge is power •      Release your data, research, and results. Learning from others is critical. •      Communicate the “where” and the “how much” (but don’t over-promise). Social license to operate •      Community and regulatory engagement is a long and constant process. •      Monitoring and assurance are critical tools for gaining a social license. Consistent messaging •      Terminology matters: carbon mineralisation, mineral carbonation, CO2 mineralisation, and basalt storage. [Using all these terms interchangeably confuses even an informed audience; are we discussing the same thing?] •      Overwhelming evidence is that it is safe and secure (see points one and two) [Emphasise this point, do not focus on the 0.0001% low probability, low consequences issues -science is never perfect]. Last bit, two bucket list goals ticked - which should rarely happen during work time. I got to see the Aurora Borealis (!!) and cross a mid-ocean ridge (maybe three, as I got to visit Iceland - what an amazing place in the world).

Policy Officer | Carbon Capture and Storage Association

Feeling very grateful and honoured to have participated in a panel exploring market drivers for mineralisation projects at the Carbfix Mineralisation Summit in Iceland last week. The panel highlighted: 🔹 The need for strong carbon pricing, a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and bespoke support mechanisms. 🔹Regulatory drivers like streamlined permitting and the integration of CO₂ removals into UK & EU Emissions Trading System. 🔹Cross-border CO₂ transport and storage to ensure permanent, high-quality carbon removals. 🔹The importance of EU 2040 climate targets, including separate goals for carbon removals to send clear signals to the industry. Other than that, not only did I get to experience the wonder that is Iceland, but I also had the opportunity to witness first hand the world's largest operational direct air capture plant of Climeworks in action and CO2 being injected into the ground by Carbfix. Such a treat! A big thank you to fellow panellists and to Carbfix for organising an amazing conference. #CarbfixSummit24

👥 Last week, at the Carbfix Mineralisation Summit in Reykjavik Iceland, the CCSA’s UK Policy Officer Despoina Tsimprikidou spoke in the Market Drivers for Mineralisation Projects panel, alongside Nana Bule (Carbfix), Giana Amador (Carbon Removal Alliance), Chris Sherwood (Negative Emissions Platform), and Rachel Fletcher, PhD (Morgan Stanley). The discussion highlighted key strategies for scaling up mineralisation projects. Panel highlights included: 🔹 The need for strong carbon pricing, a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and bespoke support mechanisms. 🗨 Despoina stated, "Industry stands ready to deliver investment into CCS; we now need clearer market signals that provide a long-term vision and certainty that demand for permanent carbon storage will occur." 🔎 Learn more about the summit and about the role of CCS in driving climate solutions here: https://lnkd.in/dxbhh4hf #CCUS | #CarbonCapture | #NetZero | #CarbfixSummit24
