🐝 VOICES from COP16 🌱 Why does agroecology matter at COP16? Today Heidi Ortega Trujillo, Vice Minister of Agricultural Affairs of the Ministry of Agriculture of Colombia gives us her insights from Cali! 👉 Heidi Ortega Trujillo reminds us that it is essential to recognize that agriculture is fundamental, given that it drives the economy of families in a country like Colombia, which is mostly rural. Therefore, the conservation of diversity in the different places of this country requires an articulation with the way food is produced in the territories and it is essential that within the framework of COP16, governments effectively reach serious commitments. 👉 She explains that agroecology is the way forward, because it doesn't only recognize the knowledge in the territories, but it looks at the territories as a system. Agroecology is the way to strengthen diversity, sovereignty, the conservation of our ecosystems, but also the diverse production of food throughout the country. The guidance offers concrete examples on boosting agrobiodiversity through agroecological practices, including: Shifting from agrochemicals to biological farming 🌿 Encouraging diverse, local seed and crop varieties 🌾 ➡ Want to learn more about it? Join us this Thursday, October 31 @ 10 am EST for our next webinar in the #Agroecology Economies Series: Territorial Markets Healthy Food, Real Relationships, and a Fair Deal October 31, 10am EST Food markets have existed for millennia. Yet in past decades, a combination of forces – from corporate concentration to underinvestment in municipal infrastructure – has led to the neglect of territorial markets. Territorial markets are critical public spaces where traditional, healthy, biodiverse crops are still found, where smallholder farmers have the option to sell directly to consumers and reduce dependence on intermediaries, and consumers have a chance to buy fresh food directly from farmers. Join us to hear from grassroots, farmer-led networks from Asia, Africa, and Latin America about their experience revitalizing fresh food markets and strengthening links among farmers, consumers, and public officials. We'll also learn about the main findings of the "Food from Somewhere" report on the status of territorial markets launched by The International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems IPES-Food. Translation will be available in French, Spanish, and English. Register today: https://lnkd.in/g_DJ7ENG
