Protect Alpine Life by monitoring and managing Alpine biodiversity for the future: Observing globally, acting locally.

Chi siamo

Actions to conserve and restore biodiversity are often incoherent and not planned at the Alpine scale, preventing effective conservation actions on a transnational level. AlpsLife establishes a common framework to ensure interoperability from different datasets and their monitoring scheme, facilitating cross-national strategies. Building up on an innovative approach on data-sharing coordination, the project assesses Alpine biodiversity trends, creating a common understanding of biodiversity processes to ensure consistent conservation decisions across borders.

  • 📣 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐥𝐩𝐬𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 - Eurac Research, Coordinator of the project 🔎 We are excited to introduce the Institute for Alpine Environment - Eurac Research, Lead Partner of AlpsLife. Located in the heart of the Alps in Bolzano, Italy, it consists of a transdisciplinary team of dedicated scientists conducting both 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲. 🏔️🔬 When it comes to biodiversity, the Institute for Alpine Environment employs problem- and user-oriented approaches to assess species, ecosystem functions and services in mountain areas. Actively engaged at South Tyrol level, it also collaborates with various experts from the European and the international level. Since 2019, Eurac Research has been involved in several EU projects focused on 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐚𝐱𝐚, 𝐡𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 (WIKIAlps, AlpES, LUIGI, MonitAnt, G4B, etc.) thus playing a central role in biodiversity monitoring and data harmonization. In the AlpsLife project, Eurac Research is leading the Work Package 2 “Identification of taxa indicators at the Alpine level”. Its goal is to establish an efficient and reliable 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐚𝐱𝐨𝐧-𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬, including Alpine mammals, birds and pollinators. This will enhance our understanding on how each Alpine country relies on indicators to monitor biodiversity and assess its status. 🦋 🐾 Involving a range of experts, expected results are a 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 at EUSALP level, before developing strategies for the 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 of data between Alpine countries and reflecting on an “Early Warning System” to monitor biodiversity. Watch the interview of Chiara Paniccia, Senior Researcher at Eurac Research and Project Manager of AlpsLife, who will give you insights on the objectives of the project. 🌍💡 Stay tuned to discover more about the members of our partnership! #AlpsLifeProject #Biodiversity #AlpineSpace #Interreg #Monitoring #Data #Governance

  • 🔔 Call for Participation: International Mountain Conference 2025! 🔔 The AlpsLife project consortium will actively participate in the International Mountain Conference #IMC2025, held in Innsbruck, Austria, from 14 to 18 September 2025. The conference is currently open for abstract submissions, and AlpsLife consortium invites interested stakeholders to submit contributions for its 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐌𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 – challenges and solutions in times of global changes (FS 3.149). The #IMC is the largest conference on mountain research, fostering cross-disciplinary exchange and prioritizing synthesis for a holistic understanding of mountain systems. This session will explore how mountain regions can 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 to address global changes, focusing on innovative methods like remote sensing and community-based approaches. 📍 In-person event offering valuable opportunities for networking and collaboration. 📅 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞: 20 February 2025.
