Space, essentially is a mental construction. We can imagine space, even though we experience it as a void, an absence that we cannot perceive.
To understand space we always implies the presence of objects. We think that for an object to exist it needs some kind of space of its own, so the first one we can imagine is the one occupied by objects.
We have to imagine an environment around the object and around ourselves, because, at a certain point in our mental development, we realize that we are objects too. Space becomes the medium of our relationships with the world and everything it contains, but, despite all this, we do not experience it in a physical and tangible sense.
If space is mental and immaterial, what does this say about our relations with the world around us? When it comes to space, the mental is as powerful as the physical and it is easy to deceive the senses, and therefore the mind. After all, what is the physical if not the sensations that affect the neural networks of our brain? Where do sensations come from? How do we know that what we see is not an artifice of brain projection?
Ultimately, we don’t! Space, in the end, is what we think it is. The limits of our ability to know through our sense organs and our ability to imagine through our cognitive faculties are isomorphic with the limits of what we can conceive.
