Chi siamo

Improving everyday life and creating real value for the world of research and industry by designing and developing magnets, applications and innovative superconducting systems. The ASG Superconductors group of companies has recently undergone re-organization to incorporate all elements of our activity into a single structure. The aim is to bring together the capabilities within the three units to secure and improve our position as a world-class Italian company, already a worldwide leader in the production of magnets both for scientific research and for the industrial sector and to develop more effectively the magnesium diboride (MgB2) wire and MRI businesses. Competence, knowledge and the ability to work with cutting edge technologies and hi-tech materials remain at the core of our organization. Managers, technicians and all the people who work for ASG Superconductors renew every day their commitment to increase our technological capabilities and productivity, collaborating worldwide with the main scientific research institutes and with the sector’s market leaders.

***PRESS RELEASE*** IRIS' INNOVATIVE SUPERCONDUCTIVITY FOR ENERGY SAVING. AS PART OF THE IRIS PROJECT, FUNDED BY THE PNRR, INFN AND ASG SUPERCONDUCTORS ARE WORKING ON A 1GW SUPERCONDUCTING CABLE FOR THE TRANSPORT OF ENERGY WITHOUT DISPERSION AND WITH A REDUCED ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT Rome, Genoa, 3 October 2024 - Research and industry together to develop innovative solutions for science, energy and the environment: the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) and ASG Superconductors are pooling the expertise and skills of those working at the frontier of scientific and technological research and those involved in industrial development and the production of advanced technologies, to develop the highest-performance superconducting cable ever made in Italy. The new synergy between INFN and ASG Superconductors was born thanks to IRIS (Innovative Research Infrastructure on applied Superconductivity), a project financed with funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan-NextGenerationEU allocated for research infrastructures by Mission 4 of the Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR). ASG Superconductors was awarded the main tender for the IRIS project by the INFN, which is the promoter and project leader. The aim of IRIS is the creation of a nationwide infrastructure capable of developing innovative technologies for environmental sustainability. These are superconducting technologies with a higher temperature than conventional ones, and a higher magnetic field. They are used both in fundamental research, to build the magnets of next-generation particle accelerators, and in other fields, such as energy, where they can be used to make high-power cables for sustainable transport, without dissipating energy in the form of heat. To achieve this goal, IRIS will build a prototype of a cable made of an innovative high-temperature superconducting material, magnesium di-boride (MgB2), and an infrastructure to validate this and other technological solutions, introducing standards (ISO, IEEE, IEC, etc.). Using cables based on the technology being developed by the IRIS project to transport electricity could reduce losses due to dissipation and dispersion by a factor of five compared to conventional lines. To give you an idea: assuming the use of a 1,000 km superconducting line transporting 3 GW of power (equivalent to about 5% of Italy's thermoelectric production), the equivalent of 150,000 tonnes of CO2 per year would be saved. And electromagnetic emissions and ground heating could also be reduced to zero, minimising the space needed to lay overhead lines or conventional cables, with great benefit for the environment and a significant reduction in construction and operating costs. Finally, the new technology will be fully compatible with the liquid hydrogen storage chain, as it can operate at the same temperature.-----> Read the full press release. . . . #energy #Mgb2 #energywire #greendeal #superconductors #PNRR #IRIS INFN

IRIS INNOVATIVE SUPERCONDUCTIVITY FOR ENERGY SAVING - WORKSHOP To achieve the green deal is necessary to innovate the grid infrastructure to reduce dispersion to zero and reduce environmental impact. Superconductivity and, in particular, our MgB2 technology have already proven their reliability, both in research projects and in the medical sector, and now, thanks to the IRIS project in which we are involved with a reference institute such as the INFN  will become increasingly mature to transfer innovation and advantages in the key sector of energy transport and electricity grids. To discover more join us October 3, 12 PM @ BSBF2024 . . . #ASGSuperconductors #BSBF #IRIS #grid #superconductors #MGB2 #energy

Superconductors are a key technology to increase the resilience of the energy grid contributing in reaching several objectives of the green deal and clean energy generation. We’re talking about materials conducting electricity with virtually no resistance and therefore no loss of energy through heat generation. Some superconductors only work at extremely low temperatures (LTS): not the ideal solution for carrying electricity on everyday locations. Some others works at higher temperature (HTS), always well below 0 °C, but with some issue related to price, sourcing of rare earths, limited lengths and poor mechanical properties. With the greater flexibility of our unique HTS supercondutor, the MgB2 wire manufactured with ex-situ process, we have succeeded in designing and developing solutions that better fit with the typical specifications of products ranging from power cables to magnets for the medical and energy sectors. With our unique manufacturing process, MgB2 wires can be handeld almost like convential copper or aluminum wire: no white gloves handling is needed at all, and have unmatched electrical performance, mechanical properties, and single piece length that allow for the react & wind technology, minimizing the number of joints (a single wire can be long up to. 6’000 m and more)  and making HTS device manufacturing one step closer to the LTS NbTi technology, while keeping the advantage of the higher operating temperature. . . . #ASGSuperconductors #Mgb2 #energy #energygrid #mri #innovation

Magnetic confinement for Stellarator. In 2006 ASG Superconductors has delivered 30 non-planar superconducting coils of Wendelstein 7-X magnetic system, which has the main purpose to demonstrate the stellarator properties. The systems main parameters are the following: its major radius measures 5.5 m, the magnetic field generated reaches the value of 3 T for an overall stored magnetic energy of 600 MJ. The coils are wound using an internally cooled Cable-In-Conduit Conductor with copper stabilised NbTi strands co-extruded in a jacket of hardenable Al alloy. . . . #magneticconfinement #fusionenergy #stellarator #ASGSuperconductors #W7X #Wendelstein https://lnkd.in/dE7HMNiA
