"𝐀𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝?!" That’s the typical response from CPOs when they first hear about Adam's Hand - and honestly, I get it! Just 6-7 years ago, there were only four multi-articulating hands available. Fast forward to today, and there are at least 15 on the market, with even more on the way! So, how do you navigate this sea of options? Every prosthetic user has unique needs, so a one-size-fits-all approach just doesn’t cut it. However, at BionIT Labs, after 6 years of R&D and close collaboration with users and clinicians, we’ve identified two key needs that everyone shares: 𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐬𝐞 and 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲. 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐬𝐞 minimizes cognitive load and muscle fatigue during device control, while 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 boosts user confidence, empowering them to engage in a wider range of activities without hesitation. So 𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐮𝐬𝐞 + 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 = 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭 = 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 = 𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞. But, how did we obtain these two features? We’ve reimagined the traditional technology that most multi-articulating hands rely on - typically using one motor for each finger. Instead, Adam's Hand utilizes just 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬, with a unique underactuated design that allows a single motor to move the fingers from index to pinky. This results in a 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐩, where the fingers intuitively adjust to the shape and size of objects, eliminating the need for complicated muscle contractions to switch through dozens of useless grip patterns. The result? 𝐀 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥, 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 (I'll tell you more about it in a future post, but you can get the idea in the video below).
