The Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) from the European Union represents a major advancement in holding companies accountable for their environmental and human rights impacts. This new law requires companies, regardless of their location, to carry out thorough assessments of their activities, identify potential risks, and take measures to mitigate any negative effects. With enforcement set to begin in 2027, companies need to start preparing to meet these strict standards. The Fabric of Your Favorite Jeans Since 1938
Chi siamo
Established in 1938, a short distance between Milan and the Alps, in a scenic nature reserve, Valle del Ticino, Candiani Denim is an internationally renowned, vertically integrated denim mill that supplies some of the most prestigious fashion brands in the world. Specializing in rigid and stretch, as well as selvedge and full-width denim, today Candiani is Europe’s largest denim mill. As industry pioneers – being some of the first to utilize only the finest, responsibly sourced cotton, fibers and dyes, and clean technologies to save water, energy and replace harmful chemicals – sustainable production is at the heart of what we do. The integration of circularity into our production processes and as a fundamental part of our product design is the natural evolution of our approach to producing denim in a better way. “We are excited to play a pivotal part in the current industrial revolution towards greater sustainability. Our vision for the denim of the future is both regenerated and regenerating. From fiber to finish, we aim to make 100% compostable denim with a net positive impact at every stage in its lifecycle—produced from smart bio-based materials and innovative processes, where every component is celebrated and has its own story to tell.” -Alberto Candiani, General Manager, Candiani Denim

What advancements have been made in denim innovation in 2024? From the development of next-generation fibers and eco-friendly dyes to the implementation of water-saving technologies and laser finishing treatments, the focus has been on reducing the carbon footprint of denim production. Although efforts have been made to address the environmental impact of the denim industry, ongoing challenges still require urgent attention and further improvements. We believe that true innovation can only occur alongside sustainability. Fashion is one of the most polluting sectors globally and has a significant social impact. We see two paths to facilitate a real, sustainable transition: a widespread educational campaign to empower consumers to make more informed choices or legislation to improve production processes, sales, and product distribution. Ideally, both regulatory and educational initiatives will work hand in hand to bring about positive change. We are truly humbled to have made it to the stage of the CNMI Sustainable Fashion Awards again in 2024, thanks to the collaboration with our valued partner Lenzing! The Lenzing Group received the Biodiversity & Water Award for “Glacial Threads: From Forests to Future Textiles.” This award celebrates organizations that recognize the importance of biodiversity and water and are actively taking steps to protect, restore, and regenerate these natural systems in their business practices. The project focuses on glacier protection and promotes circular practices in the textile industry. Lenzing developed an innovative solution using biodegradable and recyclable cellulosic LENZING™ fibers to cover glaciers. Once these geotextiles reach the end of their life, they are recycled into new textile fibers, resulting in the creation of the denim “Glacier Jacket.” This was made possible through collaboration with committed partners, including Marchi & Fildi Spa, Blue of a Kind, and our mill. The project was unveiled at the International Day of Forests at the United Nations Office in March 2024, demonstrating the power of collaboration in fostering circular fashion. In the previous year, we were already recognized by CNMI for our COREVA™ stretch technology, while Gucci received an award for their recycling program based on our post-consumer recycled denim. Our new recycled denim collection consists of five fabrics: three are made from 100% post-industrial recycled cotton, one is made from 57% post-industrial recycled cotton, and one is made from 38% post-consumer recycled cotton. Post-industrial recycled denim is sourced from the unavoidable waste generated during the manufacturing process, while post-consumer recycled denim comes from old, used jeans. In addition to recycled content, we use a vegetable-based, biodegradable, and non-toxic sizing compound, as well as innovative low-impact technologies, to make our dyeing process free of microplastics and to save water, chemicals, and energy. Although PCR and ReGen denim are leading examples of recycled denim production, their scalability is limited due to our size. We believe that developing innovative and sustainable solutions is the first necessary step towards a circular economy. However, these solutions need to be scaled up to make a true difference. Consequently, we have been seeking a partner to collaborate with to apply our research and development progress to generate volumes that can significantly impact the denim industry.
