#Climatechange and #biodiversityloss are intertwined crises with common causes and effects. Research, science-based tools, and collaboration are taking center stage as national and international efforts to understand, monitor and promote biodiversity ramp up. From the ongoing COP16 Colombia on Biological Diversity to the NBFC - National Biodiversity Future Center, Italy’s first National Research and Innovation Center dedicated to biodiversity, getting accurate knowledge and data to decision makers and stakeholders is key. Chi siamo
The Foundation Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC) is a research centre on climate science and policy. The CMCC: - Integrates all studies on climate change and adaptation/mitigation policies - Promotes collaboration and synergy with international organisations, policy makers, and industry - Provides technical-scientific support to the institutions involved in the negotiation and international cooperation activities. CMCC produces thorough studies regarding climate variability, causes, and consequences, through the development of high-resolution simulations based on global models of Earth systems and regional models, with a particular focus on the Mediterranean area. CMCC's research assures the maintenance of highly reliable products and instruments, which are made available to the scientific community and to further studies on climate science and climate change impacts. CMCC maintains, checks, and develops numeric model simulations, which are used to study the effects of climate change on the following areas: economy, agriculture, coastal areas, marine and land environment, hydrogeological cycle, carbon cycle and human health.

At its current rate, #biodiversity loss represents an unprecedented crisis, further exacerbated by climate change. Researchers are assessing the status of the loss and its impacts on human systems, and developing innovative solutions and technologies to support the resilient coexistence of all species. In conjunction with the #COP16 - United Nations Biodiversity Conference in Colombia, this week’s issue of #CMCCUpdates delves into CMCC research on biodiversity conservation. ⤵ #climatechange #climateimpacts #biodiversityloss #ecosystems #naturalcapital #ecosystemsdegradation #speciesextinction #naturebasedsolutions #coastalconservation Massimo Tavoni, Johannes Emmerling, Francesco Granella Melissa Latella, Sergio Noce, Monia Santini

How we detect and map biomass loss in tropical forests can play an important role in conservation efforts. However, unlike large-scale deforestation, small-scale disturbances are often difficult to pinpoint and quantify. A new study, led by CMCC researcher Chiara Aquino and funded by the University of Edinburgh, helps improve the way in which we map small-scale damage to tropical forests. The research combines satellite data and on-the-ground measurements to identify the best method for tracking biomass loss in tropical forests. Read more: https://ow.ly/3h1a50TUwe0

#SaveTheDate | "Transformative changes for effective risk governance" 🌐 EFDRR webinar 📅 6 November 2024 – h.10:00-11:00 CET The Political declaration of the high-level meeting on the midterm review of the Sendai Framework (May 2023) clearly states that while progress on disaster risk governance has been achieved, more needs to be done. A global call to States has been issued to promote a comprehensive and holistic risk governance, which should consider a multi- and systemic risk perspective, encompass all stages of DRM and ensure a whole-of-society, whole-of-government, and inclusive approach. Although the importance of effective horizontal and vertical coordination among key actors, as well as the need to integrate Disaster Risk Reduction across various policy areas, is widely recognized, significant challenges remain in their adoption and implementation. This webinar connects the dots across recent initiatives on risk governance implemented at different levels and across different sectors with the final aim to disseminate key findings and delving into the enabling conditions that have the potential to unlock transformative changes.
