This causes complications including chronic severe and unpredictable pain, anemia, swelling, fatigue. SCD is not contagious, but there is no universal cure. An estimated 100,000 people in the US live with the disease. People with SCD can live full lives, and blood transfusions are one of the most critical treatments for patients. Once again, donations can truly make a difference—especially while the American Red Cross has declared an emergency blood shortage after its national blood inventory plummeted more than 25% in July. Also, since blood types aren't equally distributed among the population, supplies suitable for specific groups are systematically scarce. We recently sealed a partnership with The Blood Center – the primary supplier of blood, blood components, and plasma derivatives to local hospitals throughout South Louisiana and parts of the Mississippi Gulf Coast – for the supply of our Milano smart scales for blood collection.
