A new generation of TEM instrumentation based on open standards, open interfaces for customized arrangements

Impress is a cutting-edge Horizon Europe research & innovation project aimed at transforming the field of transmission electron microscopy. Bringing together 19 partners from 11 European countries, Impress will develop a new generation of instrumentation that is flexible and adaptable. Based on open standards, interfaces, data formats and interchangeable components, the platform will allow for customized, interoperable arrangements. The project is funded by the European Union.     🎯What an engaging inaugural workshop for our project! The first IMPRESS Training Workshop, co-organized by Euro-BioImaging and CERIC-ERIC with support from Promoscience, brought together a wide range of scientists, technologists, users and stakeholders on November 5 and 7 for a deep dive into advancements in TEM. 🌐During the two virtual sessions, project partners shared their expertise, illustrating some of the key developments achieved within the #IMPRESS project, including innovations in high-resolution electron sources, event-based detectors, real-time data processing tools, and in situ methodologies. 💡This collaborative forum highlighted critical challenges and emerging solutions, emphasizing the importance of interoperability, standardized data practices and enhanced capabilities for applications in materials science, bioimaging, energy research and other fields.     💡An engaging start to the First IMPRESS Workshop on Collaborative Advancements in Transmission Electron Microscopy! Day 1 of the inaugural Workshop wrapped up with lively discussions and insightful presentations on electron sources, optics and detectors, and software and data management in TEM. Highlights of the Day: 🔸Multi-purpose Bright Electron Sources by Axel Lubk (IFF@IFW Dresden): Introducing innovative electron sources and electrostatic correctors and discussing advanced simulation techniques. 🔸Event-Based Detectors by Luiz Tizei (CNRS): Introducing next-generation event-based detectors designed for high-precision electron microscopy. 🔸FAIR Data in TEM by Federica Bazzocchi & Ruggero Lot (Area Science Park): Discussing software solutions and strategies to standardize and streamline TEM data management enhancing interoperability. The breakout sessions provided participants with an opportunity to explore these topics in greater depth.     As the Big Science Business Forum BSBF2024 in Trieste concludes, we reflect on the valuable insights and opportunities this event has fostered. 🎯 With over 1300 delegates and the presence of leading European Big Science Organizations, the forum provided a key platform for dialogue between the high-tech industry and the scientific community. Throughout the event, the #IMPRESS project team engaged in productive discussions with industry leaders, researchers and technical experts, exchanging ideas on emerging innovations and the future of Big Science. 💡 We were particularly inspired by the collaborative atmosphere, which highlighted the strategic role of innovation in addressing global scientific challenges.     🧾 An interesting study carried out by Johan Verbeeck and colleagues from the University of Antwerp, a partner in the IMPRESS project, exemplifies how deep learning tools can improve materials characterization and be integrated into advanced electron microscopy platforms. These improvements promise to make nanoscale research more efficient and accessible.
