In recent years, the #scientific community has been engaged in the search for #innovative solutions to counter the spread of SARS-CoV-2, in particular through aerial #transmission. Prominent among these is the study ‘SARS-CoV-2 Inactivation in Aerosol by Means of Radiated Microwaves’, published in Viruses on 27 June 2023. Conducted by Antonio Manna and other researchers, in collaboration with ViroStatics SRL and the Defence Institute for Biomedical Sciences, the study explored the use of microwaves to reduce the #viral load of SARS-CoV-2 in aerosols, with surprising results. Using a technique based on the emission of radio frequency (RF) waves, the researchers were able to demonstrate a 90% reduction in the #virus' infectious capacity. The method exploits the resonant energy transfer effect (SRET), which induces acoustic vibrations in virions, damaging their outer structure and rendering them inactive. This approach was tested on aerosolized viral samples in the laboratory and proved to be not only effective, but also safe, with power levels meeting #safety #regulations for human exposure. Among the key results, it was observed that microwaves, emitted at frequencies between 8 and 10 GHz, were able to drastically reduce viral infectivity in a timeframe as short as one minute. Even when the power of the waves was reduced to 6 V/m, a level considered safe for human environments, the antiviral efficacy remained high. These data suggest that the #technology can be applied in closed environments to reduce virus transmission quickly and safely. It is precisely on this innovative principle that the #e4life devices were developed. With the arrival of autumn, #respiratory viruses have returned to circulate in #Italy, and forecasts for the 2024 #influenza season indicate a record situation. Experts estimate around 150,000 new flu cases per week, with the risk of surpassing 14 million total infections, similar to last year. Professor Fabrizio Pregliasco explained that the return of colder weather favors the spread of respiratory viruses, creating challenges for the #healthcare system. The combination of flu, COVID-19, and other viruses could increase cases and put hospitals under pressure across Italy. This month, the first flu case of the season was identified in Novara, marking the start of a challenging season. #Health authorities emphasize the importance of vaccination to reduce the risk of complications, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and people with pre-existing conditions. Respiratory viruses, such as COVID-19 and #influenza, spread mainly through #respiratory droplets. Those are released into the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, talks or breathes. The droplets can be inhaled by other people, causing infection. For COVID-19, smaller viral particles can remain suspended in the air as aerosols, especially in closed, poorly ventilated rooms, increasing the risk of infection in these spaces. The infection process can be divided into: - #Transmission: Transmission of viruses can occur either directly, by inhaling infected droplets, or indirectly, by touching contaminated surfaces and then bringing the hands to the face, particularly to the eyes, nose or mouth. Although infected droplets may settle on surfaces and the #virus may remain active for some time, airborne transmission remains the main route of infection, especially for SARS-CoV-2. - #Incubation: After exposure to the virus, there is an incubation period during which the virus multiplies without causing obvious symptoms. For influenza, this period is generally 1-4 days, while for COVID-19 it can range from 2 to 14 days. At this stage, people may already be contagious, even if asymptomatic. - Symptoms #Manifestation: When the virus has reached a sufficient amount in the body, symptoms begin to appear. Both COVID-19 and influenza mainly affect the respiratory tract, causing common symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat and fatigue. However, COVID-19 can present with additional and distinctive symptoms, such as loss of taste and sense of smell, and is more likely to cause severe forms of the disease, which may require hospital care.
