🌿 Mountain Grasslands: Guardians of Alpine Landscapes 🌿 Mountain grasslands are key biomes for the conservation of our precious alpine landscapes. However, these vital ecosystems face significant challenges, including yield losses due to drought events. For years, we have been collaborating with the consortium Condifesa Bolzano, Hagelschutzkonsortium, to co-design a parametric insurance scheme based on satellite data. This innovative approach aims to mitigate the impacts of climate change on our grasslands and support local farmers. Today, we had a workshop to demonstrate the work we are doing in the Horizon Europe project ScaleAgData and discuss how it could contribute to mountain grassland insurance systems. In ScaleAgData, within the Grassland R&I Lab, we explore the potential of combining optical and SAR satellite data to improve the temporal frequency of satellite-based estimates of grassland yield. It is a pleasure to use our research at the service of local communities, ensuring a sustainable future for our alpine regions. We are also scaling up our approach to different agrosylvopastoral systems by collaborating with our project partner, the Andalusian Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research and Training (IFAPA) in Cordoba. Over the next few months, we are hosting the PhD student María José Muñoz Gómez from the University of Cordoba. Together with IFAPA, María José is evaluating the applicability of our methodologies in Mediterranean oak savannas in Spain. #MountainGrasslands #Conservation #ClimateChange #SustainableAgriculture #ScaleAgData #CommunityService #ResearchInnovation Eurac Research Institute for Earth Observation – Eurac ResearchCenter for Sensing Solutions - Eurac Research Center for Climate Change and Transformation – Eurac Research Südtiroler Hagelschutzkonsortium ScaleAgData IFAPA Michele Claus Laura Stendardi Abraham Mejia-Aguilar Abhishek Singh Alice Crespi
