🌿 Mountain Grasslands: Guardians of Alpine Landscapes 🌿 Mountain grasslands are key biomes for the conservation of our precious alpine landscapes. However, these vital ecosystems face significant challenges, including yield losses due to drought events. For years, we have been collaborating with the consortium Condifesa Bolzano, Hagelschutzkonsortium, to co-design a parametric insurance scheme based on satellite data. This innovative approach aims to mitigate the impacts of climate change on our grasslands and support local farmers. Today, we had a workshop to demonstrate the work we are doing in the Horizon Europe project ScaleAgData and discuss how it could contribute to mountain grassland insurance systems. In ScaleAgData, within the Grassland R&I Lab, we explore the potential of combining optical and SAR satellite data to improve the temporal frequency of satellite-based estimates of grassland yield. It is a pleasure to use our research at the service of local communities, ensuring a sustainable future for our alpine regions. We are also scaling up our approach to different agrosylvopastoral systems by collaborating with our project partner, the Andalusian Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research and Training (IFAPA) in Cordoba. Over the next few months, we are hosting the PhD student María José Muñoz Gómez from the University of Cordoba. Our researchers Riccardo Barella and Carlo Marin have been working with our colleagues from terraXcube and from Institute for Mountain Emergency on the Avacor project, where a new safety device is tested. The device is designed to help avalanche victims breathe longer under the snow and potentially increasing survival time and improving rescue outcomes.   Our contribution to the project is to provide, prepare and qualify the snow that will later be used in the experiments.   Volunteers are also wanted for this project from March 17th to March 21st. 📣 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐤𝐢𝐜𝐤-𝐨𝐟𝐟   📅 Lat week we took part together with our colleagues from Center for Climate Change and Transformation – Eurac Research, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano and Ontopic in the kick-off of the project CRIMA - Evicedence-Based Management of Climate Risks where our Institute is lead partner.   ☁ The CRIMA project aims to provide decision support tools using ontologies to combine scientific literature with quantitative data in the context of climate change adaptation. 📉 This helps analyze and reduce climate risks, making it easier to implement adaptive solutions by merging flexible ontology-based models with Earth observation data systems. The project also focuses on creating user-friendly interfaces that use natural language, so even non-technical users can easily engage. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞 🏁 🏔 The SCIA project came to an end and our researchers Ludovica De Gregorio and Claudia Notarnicola had the final meeting in Rome. ❄ The project, financed by Agenzia Spaziale Italiana, aims at the development of a robust processing chain of PRISMA hyperspectral data for the estimation of snow and glacier parameters in Alpine areas, through a combined use of satellite images, field data and radiative transfer models. 🌍 This week, the European Space Agency - ESA organises "ESA Digital Twin Earth Components: Open Science Meeting" in Frascati, Italy. On Tuesday February 4, Alexander Jacob (Eurac Research) will present the interTwin DTE modules for the environment in the talk "Environmental digital twins in the interTwin project" As Climate Change requires a quantum leap in the way we observe, understand and predict the dynamic evolution of the Earth system and its complex interactions with human activities and ecosystems, #DigitalTwins have recently emerged as potential solutions to address these needs.
