European Plate Observing System a pan-European infrastructure for solid Earth science
Chi siamo
EPOS aims at creating a pan-European infrastructure for solid Earth science to support a safe and sustainable society. EPOS will enable innovative multidisciplinary research for a better understanding of the Earth’s physical and chemical processes that control earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, ground instability, tsunami, and all those processes driving tectonics and Earth’s surface dynamics. Through the integration of research infrastructures and data, EPOS will allow scientists to make a step change in developing new geo-hazards and geo-resources concepts and Earth science applications to help address key societal challenges.

Grateful for GEM Foundation’s contributions to #EPOSon!
𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝘆: 𝗘𝗣𝗢𝗦 𝗢𝗡 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗞𝗶𝗰𝗸-𝗢𝗳𝗳 The European Plate Observing System-Optimisation and EvolutioN (EPOS ON) project is a 36-month initiative (2024-2027) that brings together 34 partners from 18 countries. The project is coordinated by EPOS ERIC and aims to optimize and evolve the EPOS Research Infrastructure (EPOS RI) by enhancing the interoperability, accessibility, and integration of diverse datasets to improve risk management and resilience against natural hazards. Key expected outputs from EPOS ON's work packages include: • 𝗪𝗣𝟮: Integration of new services from various research communities into the EPOS Data Portal, along with improvements to the FAIR principles (i.e. Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles for research. • 𝗪𝗣𝟯: Strengthened EPOS services for natural hazard risk management and engagement with the EU Civil Protection Knowledge Network (UCPKN). • 𝗪𝗣𝟰: Enhanced user engagement and training, especially for early-career researchers. • 𝗪𝗣𝟱: Expansion of European and international partnerships to increase global access to EPOS services. GEM’s contributions to EPOS ON under WP3 include enhancing tools like the European ShakeMap for rapid post-event earthquake impact assessments, tools to predict population dynamics in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, and databases of damage-dependent seismic vulnerability models for European buildings. GEM will also support seismic risk services that include environmental impact maps related to CO2 emissions from earthquake damage and repairs. Through WP5, GEM will help strengthen international partnerships, extending the global reach of EPOSeu services. Discover more about the EPOS ON project: https://lnkd.in/dsyfkxx4

🤔 Have you ever thought about how a dam might influence the ground beneath it? While dams play a vital role in managing water resources and preventing floods, they can also contribute to anthropogenic hazards, including induced seismicity. These hazards arise from human activities that inadvertently affect the natural environment, leading to potential risks for communities and ecosystems. EPOS’s Thematic Core Service on Anthropogenic Hazards integrates data & expertise, enabling researchers to monitor & analyze how human activities—like building dams—can influence seismic activity. By providing access to critical datasets and tools, EPOS supports the assessment of risks and promotes informed decision-making, helping to mitigate the impacts of induced seismicity and enhance the resilience of communities and ecosystems.
