♨♨ Day 2 at the Italian Geothermal Forum has concluded, with Exergy actively contributing to key discussions! Luca Pozzoni presented Exergy’s extensive experience in geothermal power plant development, highlighting why binary technology is gaining traction as the preferred solution for geothermal resource exploitation. ♻⚡ Its closed-loop cycle with total reinjection ensures higher sustainability and zero emissions , making it the ideal choice for innovative geothermal development. The morning session, involving key representatives from the geothermal industry, once again stressed the need to remove barriers to sector growth, with a mention on expanding the 60 MWe cap in the FER2 decree—a limit that does not reflect the potential of geothermal projects under development in Italy. We were also pleased to see our customer Geothermal Engineering Ltd take the stage to showcase the United Downs geothermal project. Ryan Law, GEL's CEO and founder, delivered a highly engaging presentation, highlighting the groundbreaking opportunity this project represents: delivering the UK’s first geothermal power while harnessing geothermal brines for lithium extraction. This presentation reinforced the importance of integrated geothermal resource utilisation, combining power generation with critical mineral extraction to enhance project economic viability and attract investment. On the policy and incentives front, the first FER2 auctions have been announced for this summer. Additionally, MASE has published a consultation document to identify support measures for large-scale renewable thermal energy projects, in which geothermal can play a major role. Overall, the forum was an excellent opportunity of discussion among key industry players, reaffirming—if it wasn’t already clear—the undeniable benefits and unmissable opportunity of geothermal energy for Italy’s energy transition and economic growth. Day 1 of the Italian Geothermal Forum has come to a close, marked by insightful discussions in a packed room filled with professionals, experts from the Italian and European geothermal community, and government representatives—including the Italian Minister for Environment and Energy Security. As a proud sponsor of the event, Exergy was there to support the conversation and showcase Italy’s excellence in geothermal technology. Key Takeaways from Day 1: 1️⃣ Italy has vast geothermal potential that could play a pivotal role in the energy transition by providing stable, baseload clean energy contributing to 10% of the country's electricity production mix in 2050. 2️⃣ Italy is the birthplace of geothermal expertise and the "engine" moving geothermal innovation in Europe. Yet, despite having a strong value chain and world-class know-how, Italy has been stuck in a decade-long standstill in geothermal development, losing ground among the top 10 European countries in installed capacity. What needs to be done? ✅ Streamline permitting processes to accelerate project deployment. ✅ Develop financial instruments to cover the risks of early-stage exploration. ✅ Invest in modern geothermal technologies such as binary cycles, innovative drilling systems, and enhanced geothermal systems—solutions already being deployed worldwide but still not utilized in Italy, despite a fully capable domestic supply chain. ✅ Strengthen collaboration to promote education and awareness of geothermal’s benefits, from technology to economic and job opportunities. ✅ Enhance stakeholder dialogue to promote social acceptance of geothermal projects. Tomorrow, Day 2, promises more insightful discussions, and Exergy will actively contribute. Unleashing the Power of Innovation 📌 It has been a pleasure to be invited by Confindustria Varese to participate in the initiative organized with PoliHub - Innovation Park & Startup Accelerator, focusing on Innovation Governance and Open Innovation within companies in the mechanical sector. The initiative aimed at enhancing the competitive positioning of Varese region’s industries and creating an innovation ecosystem.
