We were thrilled to have world-famous mountaineer Erik Weihenmayer join our self-guided bicycle tour in Italy’s Alpine Valleys in mid-July. He and his partner Heather Quiroga captured the joys of riding every day at their own pace and finding adventure at every turn. Perhaps most well-known for being the first blind person to summit Mt. Everest in 2001, Erik is now the first blind person to take an ExperiencePlus! self-guided tour.
A self-guided bicycle tour is completely different and adventurous way to experience a new country and region. We used ExperiencePlus! Bicycle Tours to provided route options, a great tandem bike, and accommodations, and we picked when to go on our trip, when we wanted to start our ride each day, and what sights we wanted to take in along the way. Our luggage was transferred ahead but we still had plenty to troubleshoot and do, navigating turns and detours, handling common bike issues like a flat tire our first day, and taking in so much beautiful new culture. I was lucky enough to be invited on a few podcasts this spring and summer to share the EP story about where we came from and where we have landed after over 50 years! Although we work in a very niche industry - talking to these hosts reminded me why I love what I do. Cycling is fun to talk about and travel and hospitality is fun to talk about - whether you do one or the other (or both) I hope you can tune in and check out these great podcast producers! As a bicycle tour operator based in Italy and running tours throughout Europe, we think a lot about the impacts overtourism has on local communities and the travelers who seek to experience iconic destinations. That's one of the reasons we now offer self-guided bicycle tours in less crowded parts of Italy.
