  • Two friends who are also freelance qualitative researchers: A: What about using a laptop? B: What about it? I normally leave it at home A: Come on, Is it always on your mind that a computer can weaken human connection? You just need to use it with care, and some of those effects will be mitigated. Just put the laptop in a way that it does not create a physical barrier between you and research participants. B: Easy to say, difficult to do. I find it difficult to make eye-contact with participants, which might help strengthen bonds in interactions. To tell you the truth, I'm not comfortable taking notes on a laptop either. It makes me feel I'm leaving my participant alone in the middle of a deep and genuine conversation. Sometimes I think it's better to make a distinction between low-level notes and high-level ones. It's with the latter ones that I take a seat in front of my laptop, elaborate more on what I've wrtten on paper, get to more complex thoughts and relate to data in a more analytic way. When I try to polish my notes I often see new and interesting connections or patterns coming out. A: So you're saying you're not using your laptop in the field at all? B: Do you recall our discussions at university where some viewed the field as solely a physical space, while others saw it as a process involving fieldwork preparation and analysis? So yes, in that sense I use a laptop in the field, but for my scratch notes I need to use pen and paper. A: Yeah. (Silence).<Recently I'm doing most of my IDIs online. So, more often than not, the physical 'field' corresponds to my desk. B: Ah, really? Are you nostalgic and complaining about that? A: Yes, actually. I miss the most beautiful part of doing ethnography, which is real fieldwork and meeting people. That's a big part of us. Don't you think? No matter what, when it comes to the choice of the most time-saving and functional tool when taking notes I myself use a laptop. I can't believe you've never tried. B: Of course I have, but than I quit. The laptop offers the advantage of facilitating effective data organization. It offers more efficient ways to retrieve data, so that you'll have everything you need right in place to start building your report. However, it's unlikely that an ethnographer working alone can interview, observe, and take notes using a laptop. Well, if you work in a team or the budget allows it, a research assistant would make the difference and take the full advantage of using a laptop. But I'm a lone freelance researcher. Aren't you?
