FUlly Recyclable HYbrid bio-composite for transport applications | Horizon Europe project funded by the European Union
Chi siamo
FURHY is a 42-month EU project, funded by Horizon Europe program, started on 1st of July 2023. The project is coordinated by CETMA, an Italian RTO specialized in composites other partners involved are ONYRIQ-Spain, OLGUN CELIK-Turkey, CENTEXBEL-Belgium, GEN2CARBON-U.K., University of Salerno, RINA Consulting, LEONARDO Company, and NANOTECH-Italy. The growing demand for reducing CO2 emissions by cars has made led automotive OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) to significantly invest into the electrification and weight reduction. Similarly, the aviation industry aims to reduce CO2 emissions. Electric bikes, boards, and scooters are redefining mobility in today’s cities. These new forms of sustainable mobility are enabled by innovation in advanced materials, particularly lightweight materials. For these materials the demand will dramatically exceed current production over the next 10 to 15 years. According the above, composite materials represent a key strategic area for improving the resilience of the EU mobility industry and its development has the potential to disrupt the mobility sectors. The FURHY project aims to put Europe at a leading position of the development of a new, bio-based, smart and fully recyclable composite material, obtained by fast and low energy consumption out-of-autoclave process. The matrix will be made by a new bio-based epoxy resin formulation filled with expanded graphite (EG), that will play a multiple role in the enhancement of both material and manufacturing process, providing smart-functions. A hybrid composite will be developed using hemp and recycled carbon fibres (rCFs), thus maximizing the environmental benefits with a life-cycle perspective. The hybridization will let to exploit the advantages offered by both fibres, minimizing the relevant drawbacks. The manufacturing process will consist in a low energy version of the prepreg compression moulding (PCM). Aeronautics and automotive field are the main sectors of interest.

Thanks to our colleague Andrea Tinti (CETMA ) for presenting the #FURHY project in a dedicated poster session, during the workshop "The Future of Advanced Polymers and Composites: Strategies for Improved Sustainability" held in Parma (Italy) on 24 September 2024. The meeting was organised by RINA to promote the link between European projects working on materials sustainability, circular economy and composites.
In the beautiful setting of the Santa Elisabetta Center, University of Parma, I had the pleasure of presenting the REFRESH project EU and the #ecodesign strategy developed by CETMA during the workshop: “𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑭𝒖𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑨𝒅𝒗𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒅 𝑷𝒐𝒍𝒚𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒔: 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑰𝒎𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝑺𝒖𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚.” 🌱 The event, organized by RINA Consulting (formerly D'Appolonia), aimed to foster connections between European projects in #sustainability, #circulareconomy, and #compositematerials. ♻️ #REFRESH is a #HorizonEurope innovation project aiming to develop and demonstrate a novel circular, smart system enabling improved #recycling of glass fibre reinforced #composites derived from wind turbine dismantling or reblading. 🌍💡 It is a long road to a fully circular #windenergy supply chain. With REFRESH we aim to bring the sector a few steps closer. 🚀 🌐 Find out more: www.refresh-project.eu Additionally, the event provided a great opportunity to showcase other European projects, such as FURHY Project, during a dedicated poster session, where we highlighted ongoing innovations in the field. 🌿

Thank you for inviting FURHY Project to your Open Innovation Workshop! #repoxyble #furhy #innovation #compositematerials #workshop #collaboration #sisterprojects
Collaboration is everything in research! In the next weeks we will post about what our fellow projects presented at our Open Innovation Workshop! @Luigia Longo (CETMA , coordinator of the Furhy project), presented the FURHY work focused on the Ecodesign of biobased and recyclable composite material for aerospace and automotive applications. The FURHY project will develop an optimized bio-based, fast curing, recyclable epoxy resin, filled with expanded graphite, that will provide multifunctional and self-monitoring capability to the final composite material, where up to 80% of the total components in the epoxy resin formulation will come from renewable resources. Materials developed will incorporate both bio-based virgin fibres (hemp) and/or recycled carbon fibres (r-CF), including appropriate fiber coatings to maximize the fiber properties. The project will also develop a new effective out-of-autoclave manufacturing process consisting in prepreg compression molding (PCM), and a new closed-loop recycling technology as well, to provide valuable secondary raw materials having properties similar to the virgin materials.
