⚕️ 🩺 According to World Health Organization, global spending (public and private) on health accounts for about 10% of global GDP. As the chart shows, there is a positive relation between health expenditure per capita and life expectancy. Although life expectancy has risen considerably globally, a significant gap between countries/regions remains. This is partly related to different levels of per-capita healthcare expenditure – around $4,000 on average in high income countries and $146 in lower-middle income countries. Going forward, ageing population will lead to a rising demand for care services, putting even greater pressure on the public sector. With national budget constraints limiting public healthcare coverage, and healthcare systems struggling to adapt to ageing-related needs like Long-Term Care, the insurance sector can play a role in addressing a growing protection gap. Digitalisation and technology applied to healthcare could be the real game changer and help insurance offerings to evolve from “simple” risk coverage to a broader service provision.
