The ancestor of modern Australian merino sheep, the Saxon Merino boasts a regal history that goes back to the eighteenth century. It’s a story we love to tell. In 1765, King Charles III of Spain gifted a flock of Merino sheep to his cousin, the Elector of Saxony, to help revive the region’s sheep farming, which had been devastated by the Seven Years’ War. 229 Merino sheep were loaded in Cádiz and sent to Germany. 222 of them safely reached the port of Hamburg and were then marched 600 kilometres to Stolpen, Saxony. In Germany, the Spanish Merinos were crossbred with Saxon sheep to make their fleece thicker and better suited to the harsh climate. This led to a thriving sheep farming industry: by 1802, Saxony had 4 million Saxon Merino sheep, and German wool was recognised as the finest in the world. #VitaleBarberisCanonico #TheSaxonClub

Venerdì 25 ottobre presso l'aula magna dell'ITIS "Q. #VitaleBarberisCanonico

The Saxon Merino breed of sheep originated in the triangle of land between Stolpen, Hohnstein and Lohmen in southern Saxony, in Germany in 1765. The Saxon Merino sheep, which provides such lustrous wool today in southern Australia and Tasmania, has its origins in the "Schäferei", namely the sheep farms in these small, rural communities, which flourished both in terms of agriculture and sheep breeding.
