Franco Banfi and Sabrina Belloni were lucky enough to see rare Leatherback Sea Turtles on an expedition in Indonesia! Their lives underwater are mostly unknown. The team monitored their preferred food, jellyfish, for a few days and were successful in spotting them! Did you know? - Leatherback Sea Turtles can dive down to 1,200 meters and hold their breath for up to 85 minutes. - The turtles Franco saw were around 2 m long (they average around 1.8 m), weighing 300 kg. Unfortunately, Leatherback Turtles are critically endangered, and some have had bad encounters with humans. Interactions must always be respectful and avoid putting them under stress. You can find out more about the experience and see more of the great images on the Mares blog: https://bit.ly/3wLfn96

This week, Franco Banfi and Sabrina Belloni share some of their favorite photo moments with us. They often return to Mexico's Baja California Sur where there is an abundance of diverse mega-fauna. In the first photo from their trips, we see a striped marlin attracted by sardines and mackerels migrating along the coast. Next, we see an inquisitive silky shark which they enjoyed snorkelling with in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico. The next image featuring a vortex of fish surrounding a diver was photographed in Cabo Pulmo which has seen a great increase in biomass thanks to the local community working together to try and protect the region. They have a particular love for cetaceans. The final photo was taken off Dominica Island in the Caribbean Sea, where a large pod of sperm whales welcomed them. Next week, discover more about a rare animal Franco was lucky enough to photograph on a trip to Indonesia.

In 2008, Mares Ambassador Nuno Sà was the first person to ever photograph a whale shark in the Azores (Santa Maria Island), and began working with local scientists to try and understand why they were found there. It is the only population of whale sharks in Europe and another unique behaviour is that they migrate together with thousands of tuna fish. After studying their movements, the team noticed that the whale sharks detect schools of small fish and rely on the quick tuna to create large bait balls on the surface which they then feed on as well. Discover more in the documentary about the experience 'A Ilha dos Gigantes', soon be available internationally as ‘The Island of the Giants’. Here the trailer in Portuguese: https://bit.ly/3xKFVY5

Mares Ambassador of the month, Nuno Sá, was awarded Conservation Photographer of the Year in the Underwater Photographer of the Year competition 2024 for this image entitled 'Saving Goliath'. It tells the sad story of an injured sperm whale found in shallow waters in Costa da Caparica near Lisbon, Portugal. Many people worked together to try and save it, with around 100 people joining in within the hour, but unfortunately with the lowering tide, the whale could not be rescued. Nuno has always been a big advocate of using his photography to promote marine conservation, and this is one example where he is trying to raise awareness. Many whales are killed or injured due to collisions with ships every year, and increasing marine traffic is a growing issue for this endangered species. Nuno Sà has worked worldwide and with several international TV channels such as the BBC, Netflix, Disney and the National Geographic. This week, he tells us more about his career, photoshoots and the subjects of his photography. Nuno started his career in the Azores, specializing in big animal encounters like bait balls, big pelagic fish, whales, dolphins, sharks and mantas. He now works worldwide with a range of subjects. Most recently, he was in Africa, diving in a lake with a CCR for long periods, filming a 7cm fish for the BBC. Nuno enjoys adapting his dive skills to the stories he needs to tell - freediving to swim fast and join the action, open circuit for longer or deeper dives, or hours with his rEvo CCR to photograph shy animals with a longer lens and a tripod.
