The final FoodTraNet Network conference will be held in Portoroz, Slovenia, from 9 to 11 October. Preparing the annual meeting of #IMEKO TC23 with Claudia Zoani, Karl Presser, Maria Fernandes-Whaley, Nastasia Belc and Nives Ogrinc. Shaping the future of #metrology research in #food and #nutrition and planning the next #IMEKOFOODS conferences.

The session organized by METROFOOD-RI at the Science Summit 2024 held during the United Nations General Assembly (#UNGA79) in New York was successfully concluded. The event, titled “Agroecology, Sustainability & Innovation - a Pathway for Agrifood,” also served as an opportunity to assess the contribution of research infrastructures to the challenges faced by the global #agrifood system. As METROFOOD-RI coordinator Claudia Zoani emphasized, “Research infrastructures must operate on multiple levels, not just at the European scale. Therefore, on the one hand, at the national, regional, and local levels, and on the other — just as intensively — on a global scale. This is all the more important for an infrastructure like METROFOOD-RI because it deals with agrifood, and the very nature of the subject demands it, to truly support agrifood systems and effectively address all the challenges they face to advance toward the concrete achievement of the #SDGs”.

Yesterday we had intensive sessions at the Science Summit 2024, #UNGA79 in New York City, USA. 🤝 🌍 At #OneHealth plenary session, it was reminded the importance of international collaborations, including south-south collaborations (African Academy of Sciences), between experts from the different types of health: human, soil, and animal and of public/private partnerships commitments. The role of philanthropy and non-for-profit stakeholders in reserach was also mentioned. It was a pleasure to meet in person Venkatramana Pegadaraju from Grow Further, a non-for-profit organization working on research driven projects in #foodsecurity, #environmentalsustainability, and #globalhealth. 🦠 It was an honor to listen to gut microbiome pioneers (Dr Jeffrey Gordon from Washington University in St. Louis and Dr Tahmeed Ahmed from icddr,b and learn more on the relation between gut microbiota of pregnant woman and the to-be-born child. Microbiota-directed ready-to-use therapeutic foods represent a novel and promising approach to treat infantile severe acute #malnutrition and persistent #stunting by supporting the repair of the immune system. We look forward to the results of the different clinical trials conducted globally (Dr Billo Tall, Vanessa K. Ridaura, Ph.D. , Nigel Rollins). So pleased that the private sector was represented in the panel by Hilina Enriched Foods PLC, member of #PlumpyField network. Also a real joy to be be able to meet in person my colleagues from Groupe Nutriset and #PlumpyField network (Maria Kasparian, Hilina Belete, Rekha Lecomte, Claire Fehrenbach, Navyn Salem, and Bella Young). 🧪 A nice surprise for the last session, discovering the activities of the EU consortium METROFOOD-RI and the perspective from the National Metrology Institute of South Africa (NMISA). I acknowledge the quality exchange with the panel on the urgent need to develop reliable and low-cost #agrifood quality control tools in #Africa (Dr Maria Fernandes-Whaley, Karl Presser from ETH Zürich, Joris Van Loco from Sciensano and Claudia Zoani from ENEA). The #VAMP program (Varietal Selection for the enhancement of nutritional quality of raw material - Sélection Varietale pour l'Amelioration de la qualité nutritionelle des Matieres Premières) from Groupe Nutriset, identifies peanut varieties adapted to high incorporation rate of peanut formula in #PlumpyNut in 7 countries. #Local production made with locally-sourced raw materials requires low cost, rapid and reliable quality control tools (Bless Laboratory Services PLC, Yonatan Mengesha, Belay Asefa, Dr Krithika Anbazhagan, Prof. Naveen Puppala, Emiliano Genorini, Dave Hoisington, James Rhoads, Suresh Kumar, Agrocrops, JLA Argentina, Nicolas Sandrini).

There are only two days left until the session organised by METROFOOD-RI for the Science Summit 2024 to be held at the United Nations General Assembly (#UNGA79).    The event is scheduled for 25 September at 4 p.m. (New York time, 10 p.m. in Italy) in the Innovation Room of the Cure building, 345 Park Avenue South. The session will highlight the role of Research Infrastructures in addressing the different challenges of the #food system: #quality and #safety, #traceability and #transparency, #innovation, #digitisation, #circular bioeconomy, #sustainability and #resilience.
