We are delighted to share that our nature-based solutions pilot project has been successfully implemented in Paranoá-DF, Brazil. Through a co-creation process, we designed and built a Cerrado-based climate-resilient belt, featuring rain gardens, an infiltration trench and a bioswale, as part of a climate adaptation strategy that envisioned the transformation of Square of Block 09 into a thriving socio-ecological space. What was once a derelict, flood-prone, and highly impermeable area is now managing stormwater locally, reconnecting people with nature, and enhancing community sociability. This project demonstrates the power of collaborative, nature-based solutions in fostering urban resilience and well-being. A sincere thank you to everyone whose dedication and collaboration made this transformation possible 🌎💧🌱 #NatureBasedSolutions #UrbanResilience #ClimateAdaptation #GreenInfrastructure #CoCreation #SustainableCities #Paranoá

Nature-based Solutions for Climate Resilience in Cities of the Global South
Chi siamo
Nature-based Solutions (NBS) play a pivotal role in sustainable development. Despite a surge in NBS studies and practices, there's a notable bias toward the Global North, emphasizing the urgent need for increased NBS research and practice in the Global South, particularly in the urban sector. In this context, NBSouth: Nature-based Solutions for Climate Resilience in Cities of the Global South has emerged as an interdisciplinary project which seeks to: - Bridge the North-South gap in NBS practice and research. - Promote urban NBS projects in the global south. - Identify region-specific challenges and opportunities for effective NBS practices. - Raise awareness and build capacity for NBS in the global south

🌿✨ If you're in Brasília or nearby, join us this Saturday at 10:30 AM for the inauguration of the transformed Praça da Quadra 09 in Paranoá! 🎉 This was made possible by the NBSouth project—a collaboration between Politecnico di Milano, UnB, and several local partners—focused on nature-based solutions (NBS) for climate adaptation in the Global South. Together, we co-created a belt of rain gardens and other climate-resilient Cerrado-based NBS, helping to renaturalize the space and bring back community life. The project estimates we can absorb all rainwater falling on the square—and even some from the surroundings 🌧️. Plus, it will significantly enhance biodiversity, creating a thriving habitat for local flora and fauna. 🌱🦋 This is nature-based solution in action in Brazil! 🌎 📍 Paranoá, Praça da Quadra 09 ⏰ Saturday, 10:30 AM Come celebrate with us! 🎊 #NatureBasedSolutions #UrbanTransformation #ClimateResilience #NBSouth #PolisocialAward #WaterManagement #Cerrado #Biodiversity

#hotoffthepress #OPENACCESS our research article on #naturebasedsolutions and urban planning in the #GlobalSouth: #Challenge orientations, #typologies, and viability for #cities is finally published on @landuse policy journal of Elsevier Beautifully co-authored by Anna Giulia Castaldo, Dr., Margherita Gori Nocentini, Fabiano Lemes de Oliveira and Israa H. Mahmoud as part of the NBSouth Scientific dissemination strategy The article tackles different issues related to NBS in research and practice to address the pressing #environmental, #social and #economic challenges affecting cities. #highlights • We developed a protocol of #embeddedness collecting NBS attributes of societal challenges, ecosystem processes and viability. • NBS literature in #GlobalSouth especially tackles rapid #urbanization and informal settlements, impacts of climate change. • Water-related NBS #typologies dominate; studies on built structures, on the other hand, have received less attention. • Justice and #public #participation emerge as cross-cutting issues for the practical #viability of NBS. we are grateful to the special issue editors Dr. Abdulaziz Almulhim, Simon Elias Bibri and Ayyoob Sharifi for their leadership on Sustainable Urban Planning for Addressing the Compounded Challenges of Rapid Urbanization and Climate Change read our article here https://lnkd.in/d94qrtee
