NP-bioTech is a biotechnology product using a multipatented catalyst-based aerobic advanced material adsorbed onto an inert substrate (Catalytic Substrate, CatSub)for accelerated fermentation of critical and problematic biomass (e.g., citrus pulp or sewage sludge). NP-bioTech is defined by its inventor Fabrizio Nardo as a Rapid Catalytic Composting Process (RCCP). As RCCP, NP-bioTech is the best-in-class in-between available commercial composting processes. The product of the NP-bioTech process is a biostabilized and pasteurized product with excellent agronomic properties. After a few days of RCCP, the resulting biomass is perfectly biostabilized. The CatSub can be separated and re-circulated, while the biostabilized product can be packaged and marketed as a biofertilizer, in accordance with EU Regulation 2019/1009 for CE-labeled fertilizers. The NP-bioTech process provides energy savings of even more than 95 percent compared to technologies available on the market today and lower operating costs.

Circular-WWTP The driving principle of the circular economy is to retain materials in the economy at their maximum value for as long as possible (EC, 2020). The principle is underpinned by the EU waste hierarchy, which ranks waste management options according to their sustainability and gives top priority to preventing and recycling of waste, followed by recovery. In the context of sludge, circular economy concerns facilitating nutrient recycling and making use of secondary raw materials while ensuring environmental and health protection, followed by recovering energy. When Sewage Sludge treatment is limited to simple dewatering/drying, the final fate is disposal in landfills, incineration or, where permitted, spreading on soil (agricultural fields).[see slide 2 black layout] When, on the other hand, the sludge is destined for composting, sometimes after anaerobic treatment to produce biomethane, the resulting product is a highly valuable biofertilizer consistent with the circular economy model. [see slide 2 brown layout] Due to its high nutrient (P, N) and organic matter content, and the energy content of dried sludge comparable to that of woody biomass, sewage sludge is a potential secondary resource which can contribute to Europe’s transition to a circular economy. [see slide 3 Ordinary WWTP layout] When a wastewater treatment plant is integrated, downstream of the sludge line, with an NP-bioTech rapid catalytic composting technology, the WWTP becomes zero waste, and in addition to producing purified water, it becomes a producer of biofertilizer, precisely a Circular-WWTP. CASE STUDY: A zero waste food-industry production cycle In the heart of Sicily, a company with a vocation for innovation, from the Sicilian blood orange juice production sector, Red Island srl decided to transform the thousands of tons of peels, seeds and pulp (so-called pastazzo di agrumi) into biofertilizer. It has built the first industrial prototype of rapid catalytic composting process (RCCP), called NP-bioTech of the treatment capacity of 25,000 tons/year. Since in the above plant, in addition to citrus pulp, sewage sludge from the Red Island plant's in-house process WWTP is also treated, the Caltagirone plant has become essentially ZERO WASTE. The resulting product has been registered in the special section of the fertilizer register of the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, dedicated to fertilizers for organic farming. RED ISLAND'S NP-BIOTECH PLANT holds at least 2 records, one world and the other European. It is the only industrial-scale plant capable of fermenting citrus pulp as is, without any pretreatment (moisture = 84%, acidity pH = 3.4, and presence of essential oils, such as d-limonene) and without mixing it with other biomass or structuring material. In addition, the NP-bioTech plant in Caltagirone is the only composting plant in Europe to operate without the aid of environmental technology devices aimed at abating pollutant emissions and odors.
