⚛️NRGroup: Nuclear Reactors Group – February Highlights⚛️ 🔉Carolina Introini presented her contribution at the 11th International Symposium on Supercritical Water-Cooled Reactors hosted by the Università di Pisa. The work, ‘Non-modal Stability Analysis of the Super-Critical Water Reactor’, co-authored by Antonio Cammi, Eric Cervi and Laura Savoldi, focused on transient stability of the SCWR following a perturbation from nominal operating conditions, using non-modal techniques. 📹 Our PhD student Stefano Riva presented the application of Shallow Recurrent Decoders (#SHRED) to Nuclear Reactors, within a series of lectures on Machine Learning at University of Washington. This neural network architecture allows for mapping sparse temporal measurements to the full-state of a nuclear reactor, featuring low training cost, reconstruction of observable fields and robustness against noisy data. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dCiwszUr 🚲 Stefano Lorenzi and our PhD students Luca Coita and Guido Masotti participated in the second technical workshop of the TANDEM Project in Pisa. The workshop focused on modelling and optimization tools for assessing hybrid energy systems integrating nuclear reactors, diving into the open-source TANDEM Modelica library. Led by Politecnico di Milano, Sapienza Università di Roma, Politecnico di Torino, and Università degli Studi di Palermo, the project explores the feasibility of hydrogen production from nuclear energy, focusing on design and safety aspects to support Europe’s net-zero emissions strategy. 📚Newly published paper: - "Sensitivity Analysis on the DYNASTY Facility 1D Modelica Models with the DAKOTA-FMU Approach”. The authors Gabriele Benzoni, Carolina Introini, Andrea Missaglia, Xiang Wang and Antonio Cammi illustrate the coupling between Modelica and the DAKOTA framework to perform global and local sensitivity analysis on the DYNASTY experimental facility, showing interesting correlations between the figures of merit and the inputs parameters in natural circulation. https://lnkd.in/dUSpsEaY - "Development and modeling of a remote handling maintenance procedure for the IFMIF-DONES high flux test module electrical connectors bridge". The authors, Gabriele Benzoni, Carolina Introini, Gioacchino Micciche, Claudio Tripodo and Antonio Cammi propose a reliable approach based on Petri nets for modeling Remote Handling maintenance process in Fusion facilities using IFMIF-DONES as test case. The Nuclear Reactors Group (NRGroup) belongs to the CeSNEF-Nuclear Engineering Section of the Department of Energy, at Politecnico di Milano. At NRGroup, we are dedicated to advancing research in the field of Nuclear Energy. Our current research and development areas encompass a wide range of topics including thermal hydraulics and safety systems (both modelling and experimental), thermal mechanics, nuclear fuel performance and neutronics, multi-physics and model-based simulation and control, as well as reduced order modelling, machine learning and economics. Since 2000, our focus has primarily been on Next Generation Reactors, specifically Small-Medium Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Generation IV studies such as Lead-cooled Fast Reactors and Molten Salt Reactors. More recently, we have expanded our scope to include research on new generation reactors for Space Applications and energy systems based on renewables (Hybrid Systems) together with a R&D line on fusion reactor technology. ⚛️NRGroup: Nuclear Reactors Group – January Highlights⚛️ 📚 Welcome onboard to our new PhD student!🎉 Thrilled to introduce the research area of Elisa Cappellari. She will develop and assess behavioral models for nuclear fuel, focusing on fission gases and volatile fission products. 🦚 Our PhD student Lorenzo Loi participated at the 25th International Collaboration Meeting of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (#JUNO) held in Kaiping City from January 13-17, 2025. It was a fantastic opportunity to get in touch with the first steps of the experiment data taking. During the meeting, he presented the latest updates on the strategies for predicting the reactor antineutrino spectrum based on either model dependent approach or data driven. 📚Newly published paper: “ALFRED-burner: Core design, safety and performance”. Diego Jaramillo Sierra, Giacomo Grasso, Eric Dorval, Alessio Magni, PhD , Antonio Cammi and Alessandro DEL NEVO present an innovative LFR concept optimised for plutonium burning, developed in collaboration with the PuMMA project. 🏔️ During his research exchange at Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives Grenoble, our PhD student Guido Masotti had the unique opportunity to work with the tools developed by CEA for the techno-economic optimization of nuclear hybrid energy systems as part of the TANDEM Project. His work involved coupling the system’s dynamic simulator with the #PERSEE optimiser in the #PEGASE environment, enabling more accurate and reliable estimations of system performance across various scenarios. 💡 This exchange was not only a significant milestone in Guido’s research but also an invaluable opportunity to collaborate with a dedicated and welcoming team. 🎓 From 7th November to 22nd December, our post-doctoral researcher Carolina Introini was hosted as a visiting researcher at the University of Washington in Seattle, within the AI Institute in Dynamic Systems, upon invitation of Professor J. Nathan Kutz. 🦾 Carolina worked closely with her fellow post-doctoral researchers at the Institute and with the rest of Professor Kutz’s research group, focusing on the topic of advanced Machine Learning techinques for the monitoring of nuclear reactors and thermal-hydraulic facilities. In particular, Carolina investigated the topic of model correction and on how to bridge the gap between simulation and experimental data. 📚 Carolina would like to express her thanks to Professor Antonio Cammi and Professor J. Nathan Kutz for the opportunity, hoping for further collaboration between our research groups.

Antonio Cammi and Lorenzo Loi along with the italian #JUNO collaboration present a detailed study regarding the influence that some important reactor design parameters such as temperature profile and boron treatment have on the antineutrino emission. The analysis, applied to a benchmarked PWR system, shows which parameter set has a negligible influence on the fission fraction evolution, therefore reducing the computational time of reactor modelling. https://lnkd.in/dgw9vNWw
