Just wrapped up an incredible day in Bologna with Lodovico Parmegiani. It was inspiring to see the ‘next’-generation IVF clinic where he’s leading groundbreaking work, followed by a visit to the Nterilizer office to learn more about his brilliant innovative solutions. The day was a true taste of Bologna—not just through its science but also its culture. From indulging in authentic tortellini to exploring the city’s rich history.Days like these remind me of the importance of collaboration and mentorship in our field. Grateful for the opportunity to be around one of the best and also to call him as a friend.

❗❗ Un rischio senza precedenti per la vita sulla Terra: con queste parole 38 scienziati di fama mondiale (tra i quali alcuni premi Nobel) chiedono, con un articolo pubblicato sulla rivista Science che fa riferimento a un report di 300 pagine, di fermare la ricerca sui cosiddetti «batteri specchio», costruiti a partire da immagini speculari di molecole presenti in natura, e sottolineano la necessità di aprire un ampio dibattito sul tema. Gli organismi sintetici, affermano, potrebbero insediarsi nell'ambiente e superare le difese immunitarie dei viventi, mettendo a rischio di infezioni letali esseri umani, animali e piante. È improbabile, sostengono, che gli antibiotici esistenti possano essere efficaci contro questi nuovi patogeni creati in laboratorio. 👉«La minaccia è senza precedenti - ha detto al Guardian Vaughn Cooper, biologo evoluzionista dell'Università di Pittsburgh -. I "batteri specchio" probabilmente eluderebbero molte risposte del sistema immunitario umano, animale e vegetale e causerebbero infezioni che si diffonderebbero senza controllo». Nel gruppo di esperti ci sono Craig Venter, che ha guidato la ricerca sul genoma umano negli anni '90, e i premi Nobel Greg Winter (Università di Cambridge) e Jack Szostak (Università di Chicago). «A meno che non emergano prove convincenti del fatto che la "vita speculare" non comporti pericoli, riteniamo che i batteri e altri organismi specchio, anche se dotati di misure di biocontenimento ingegnerizzate, non dovrebbero essere creati - scrivono gli autori su Science -. Raccomandiamo quindi di non autorizzare la ricerca e chiediamo ai finanziatori di non sostenerla».

The film "Joy" on Netflix is directed by Ben Taylor, recognized for his work on episodes of "Sex Education" on the same platform.
