The increasing demand for sustainable and safer air mobility has rendered System Electrification and Digitalization pivotal drivers for future Small Aircraft's competitiveness. Cleansky2 SAT project has researched how to overcome the limitations of traditional EASA CS-23 Category (Normal, Utility, Aerobatic and Commuter Aeroplanes) through the development and integration of innovative and cost-effective fly-by-wire flight control systems and electrical technologies. The video showcases the Aircraft-0 Integration Laboratory, a facility for testing critical systems like the electrical system, flight controls and landing gear. It features a hardware-in-the-loop flight simulation capable of subjecting each piece of equipment to realistic operating conditions and performing closed-loop testing, including pilot and sensors, for all flight phases in routine and emergency scenarios. #piaggioaerospace #cleanaviation #cleansky2 #smallairtransport #morelectric #flybywire #electricaltechnologies #flightsimulation Clean Aviation https://lnkd.in/d-PDTmTX

In October, Gianvito Apuleo participated for Piaggio Aerospace in the EASN - European Aeronautics Science Network congress in Thessaloniki (Greece), delivering two key presentations. Firstly, as a representative of the ALRIGH2T EU Project, Gianvito focused on critical aspects relevant to future zero-emissions aircraft direct refuelling at airports. Piaggio Aerospace plays a crucial role in defining technical specifications for direct refuelling, and this procedure will be tested at Milan Malpensa Airport using a demo based on the Piaggio P.180. Gianvito also presented an insightful paper detailing the applications of a novel fibre-optic Structural Health Monitoring System for monitoring bonding lines of a composite aircraft wing within the Clean Sky 2 Small Air Transport (SAT) programme framework. He illustrated the project's objectives: increasing safety through periodic updates of the bonding lines' integrity, reducing recurring costs by transitioning to an on-demand approach from the usual scheduled maintenance, and collecting design benefits by modulating safety coefficients due to increased knowledge of the structural system behaviour. Piaggio Aerospace's contributions to these valuable projects underscore the company's unwavering commitment to more sustainable and safer air mobility solutions. Last week, Piaggio Aerospace participated in The International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS) 2024. During the event, Michele Mancini presented the project “Aircraft-0 SAT D1” to develop greener, safer, and more cost-effective solutions for Small Air Transport. The project showcased cutting-edge technologies such as the “More Electric Aircraft (MEA)” and the “Fly-by-Wire (FbW)” systems, which will shape the future of air mobility by enhancing efficiency and reducing environmental impact. We are excited about our significant advancements and thank our team and international partners for contributing to this achievement. We look forward to the next steps in bringing these innovations to life. This achievement underscores our commitment to driving system electrification and digitalization—key enablers in meeting the growing demand for more sustainable, safer air mobility solutions. #ICAS2024 #FlyByWire #MoreElectricAircraft #PiaggioAerospace #CleanSky2 #CleanAviation #SustainabilityInAviation #FutureOfFlight Clean Aviation

29 August 1964 - The Piaggio PD.808 performs its maiden flight from the Genoa Airport. Piaggio – today Piaggio Aerospace – in 1960 started the development of a business jet aircraft in a move to reaffirm its presence in the general aviation market after the recent successes of the P.136 and P.166. In 1961 the Company reached an agreement with Douglas for the development of what was to be known as the PD.808, a twin-turbojet, 6-8 seat business aircraft. The PD.808 was powered by two Bristol Siddeley (later Rolls Royce) Viper 526 turbojets, manufactured under license by Piaggio. The third prototype was completed as a demonstrator, with a luxurious 5-seat interior designed by Pininfarina, the famous automobile designer, and was used as a Company aircraft for several years and as a chase plane to follow flight tests of the P.180 in the late eighties. The PD.808 was operated by the Italian Air Force for transport, training and radio aid calibration until 2003 and is worth a place in Italian aviation history not only for the use of relatively new technologies in Italy’s post-world War aircraft industry but also because it is still the only passenger jet aircraft designed, manufactured and certified in Italy. It happened today 93 years ago! Alessandro Mazzoni – the father of the iconic Piaggio P.180 - was born in Florence on 23 August 1931. He worked at Piaggio's Engineering Department as a structural designer from 1957 to 1966, focusing on the P.166 and the PD.808. In 1966 he went to the Piper Aircraft Co. in Vero Beach (Florida, U.S.A.) where he worked as a designer until 1968, when he returned to Piaggio. During his second period at Piaggio, he became Technical Director in 1974 and his activities culminated in the development of the P.180, whose US patent was issued in his name. The aircraft is being produced at the Piaggio Aerospace plant in Villanova d’Albenga, with more than 200 units operational around the world.

It happened exactly 160 years ago today! On July 15th, 1864, Rinaldo Piaggio was born in Genoa. 🚢 At the age of twenty, he set up his new factory in Sestri Ponente to produce ship interiors. 🚂 By the time he was in his forties he had started manufacturing railway carriages: firstly in Sestri Ponente and thereafter in Finalmarina. ✈ During the first world war, when he was in his fifties, a move into aviation and specifically aircraft production began, a history now stretching back more than 100 years. A legacy that Piaggio Aerospace proudly carries on today.

🌟 Exciting news! Last week, ALRIGH2T EU Project held its first technical workshop. Hosted online on June 11, the session was dedicated to showcasing and refining two innovative refueling techniques under development: the direct refueling technique presented by SEA Milan Airports, and modular hydrogen technology explained by Universal Hydrogen. 🗨️ The workshop sparked insightful discussions on both methods, addressing critical aspects as the project enters its sixth month. Our focus remains on the ultimate goal: developing robust and complementary refuelling solutions that meet the stringent requirements of commercial aviation while upholding rigorous safety standards.
