📣 QuantaBrain 𝗼𝗻 “𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗵𝗶 𝘁𝗿𝗮 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝘇𝗮 𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲” – #𝗜𝗹𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗲𝟮𝟰𝗢𝗿𝗲 🙏 Recently I had the pleasure of being a guest on #IlSole24Ore, interviewed by vittorio carlini, whom I thank for the insightful conversation! Full video here 👇 https://lnkd.in/d-RXjeEk   Here, I’d like to expand on a few key concepts.   ❓  𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘇𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗶𝘁? AI processes an image, which is essentially an ordered set of numbers, and outputs a single number representing its class.   Thus, AI is essentially a complex non-linear function that takes inputs and provides outputs. When we say AI is based on #SupervisedLearning, it often sounds magical—you provide inputs, the desired outputs and AI learns ALONE! However, it’s akin to #fitting a model. Training is about determining the weights of the fit, but the formula is chosen by the user. 𝑵𝑶𝑻 𝑷𝑼𝑹𝑬 𝑴𝑨𝑮𝑰𝑪 🔮   There are versatile models, like those based on #FullyConnectedLayers or standard #CNN. Using them is like fitting the data with a #polynomial. While polynomials are good generic approximators [1], knowing your data’s behavior allows for much better fits.   Similarly, an AI developer's skill lies in designing architectures tailored to specific applications! ❓  𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗜 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀? AI makes mistakes because it simplifies—starting with a large data set and outputting a single number, the class—much like any existing tool or even humans. ❓  𝗜𝘀 𝗔𝗜 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻? For certain tasks, yes—consider the speed at which ChatGPT generates text! Additionally, it can analyze data beyond human understanding.   For instance, fMRI is 4D data, which is challenging for our visual system to comprehend. Some argue we live in a 3D world and perceive time, so we should understand these data. The main difference is that we analyze 3D surfaces (object's shape) but not its internal composition. fMRI is like a translucent brain showing the blood's flow. We can’t analyze a closed system with internal moving elements from the outside.   Thus, AI can analyze things beyond our understanding, acting as an extension of our intelligence. Is it better? No, it’s #different and #complementary. ❓  𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗜 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀? Do you blindly trust the opinion of your smartest collegue? Probably not! AI is simply the new smart colleague! Decisions are complex, and a person’s or a machine’s opinion often considers only certain aspects of a problem. These amazing people, with their professional roots in the US, have embraced the “give back” principle by investing in Italian startups, especially those led by women ♀ . A bold move, considering that female-led companies receive only 3.5% of investments! Two days ago, 20Fund organized an event in Milan to connect all the female founders they’ve invested in. It could have been just another networking event, but it was so much more. 💫 From the morning, the event took an unexpected and inspiring turn. We heard the stories of extraordinary women who found incredible strength in their toughest moments. The theme of storytelling ran through all the talks, balancing detailed accounts of financial and strategic decisions with the emotional journeys that accompanied them. It was amazing how, in just one day, we all opened up about very personal parts of our journeys. Often at these networking events, everyone shows their “winning” side. But one of the beautiful things the American mindset teaches us is that the most valuable lessons come from our lowest points, after which we can only rise. 📈 🙏🏼 I feel extremely #grateful and #inspired by all the wonderful women who shared their stories and wisdom: Serra Elizabeth Falk, Lisa Tortolani, Mona Bavar, Andrea Sasso, Lucilla Mazzeo, Antonia Verna and Francesca Cavallo. 🙏🏼 At this event, I also got to know Pietro Jonathan Bonanno better, who should be an inspiration to all of us.
