Researchers at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering (PME) developed a new chip geometry that enables atom arrays to interface with photonic chips without disrupting the fragile quantum states. In this setup, quantum computations are performed in one region, and specific atoms are moved to another region where they interact with photonic devices to extract data in the form of photons. The #quantum key distribution (QKD) is a process for #cryptography that harnesses fundamental principles of quantum mechanics to exchange secret keys, which can then be used to ensure secure communication. Dr. Norbert Lütkenhaus, executive director of the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) and his research group recently released a modular, open-source software package on GitHub, which allows users to model realistic QKD protocols and calculate the generation rate for secure quantum keys using user-submitted variables for real-world scenarios. The security of today's encryption processes is threatened by the rapid development of quantum computers. This is where #quantumcommunication and the "quantum-secure" encryption strategies that are based on it come into play. These build on the future technology base provided by quantum key distribution (QKD), which promises physically secure communication based on quantum mechanical principles, and quantum repeaters, which transmit quantum states over longer distances. A new study by Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI and Europa-Institut, Saarland University took a closer look at the current state of quantum communication technologies.
