Set to run from April 13 to October 13, the pavilion will take visitors on a journey through Saudi Arabia’s rich history, modern achievements, and future initiatives. This landmark event is part of the lead-up to Riyadh hosting Expo 2030, marking a significant chapter in the country's global presence.
Designed by renowned architecture firm Foster + Partners, the pavilion is located on the scenic Yumeshima waterfront in Osaka. The structure promises a multi-sensory experience that highlights Saudi Arabia’s dynamic cultural heritage and forward-thinking projects. Through a series of immersive exhibits and interactive spaces, the pavilion will allow visitors to explore the Kingdom’s past, present, and future in an engaging and visually stunning environment.
Inspired by Tradition and Innovation
The design of the pavilion is rooted in the traditional architectural forms of Saudi villages but with a modern twist. Drawing on organic shapes, the structure emphasizes sustainability and environmental sensitivity, blending innovation with cultural authenticity. Computational fluid dynamics simulations have shaped the building to maximize natural cooling during the hot summer months while offering protection from harsh northerly winds in cooler seasons.
As visitors enter, they are greeted by a lush forecourt filled with native Saudi plants, setting the tone for the immersive journey ahead. The Saudi Courtyard, a central gathering space, invites guests to reflect during the day or enjoy vibrant performances by night. From this point, meandering streets guide visitors through a series of engaging exhibits created in collaboration with 59 Productions and Squint/Opera.
A Commitment to Sustainability
Sustainability is at the heart of the pavilion’s design. The structure utilizes low-carbon materials, energy-efficient lighting, and innovative rainwater recycling systems. Photovoltaic panels will generate electricity, while the entire pavilion is on track to meet a Net Zero Operational Carbon target. Furthermore, the pavilion follows WELL design principles, prioritizing the health and wellbeing of both visitors and staff.
Tony Miki, Partner at Foster + Partners, highlighted the pavilion’s lasting impact. The lightweight Saudi stone used for cladding not only adds to the aesthetic beauty of the structure but is also designed for easy deconstruction and future reconfiguration. This approach ensures that the pavilion’s materials can be reused, extending the life cycle of the building and reinforcing the Kingdom’s commitment to sustainability.
