Transfer of shear stresses: are screws enough? Yes, but they do it better with SHARP METAL. The hooked plate distributes the stress more evenly, increasing the stiffness of the connection. In this test on GL24h elements, a high-precision transducer enabled displacements to be measured directly on the shear plane. The graph shows this clearly. First, just the screws, then, the effect of combining them with SHARP METAL: strength increases by 30%, while stiffness has an incredible variation of +1000%. When at home or work, vibrational performance of floors is critical to people comfort, and there is no exception for mass timber floors. Griffith University is leading a project funded by the ARC Advance Timber Hub on mass timber floor vibration. The project, led by Asc/Prof Hassan Karampour, is exploring the influence HBS partially threaded screws’ spacing arrangements and the ALADIN resilient soundproofing profile can provide with respect to additional benefits for vibration performance in floor systems. The Rothoblaas materials are once again showing to have significant benefits with further experiments planned using Australian produced CLT and beams from XLam Australia. The activities, also supported by the Department of Primary Industries (Queensland) Industries with PhD student Adam Faircloth will continue until late 2027. Now that the future of construction is moving towards the hybridisation of materials, we need to look beyond timber-only, concrete-only, or steel-only fasteners. In fact, the real challenge in hybrid construction lies in managing the interfaces between different materials. These critical joints require meticulous design, in order to successfully manage the transfer of forces between elements with vastly different stiffness levels, and solutions that are conceived, tested and certified for that specific combination of structures. Does timber beat concrete in the field? In Turi, Apulia, the answer’s yes. 72 CLT flats, 12 buildings and more than 2,000 cubic metres of timber assembled: since November 2024, Cisanova SRL - Strutture in legno has already completed 8 structures, even though the concrete foundations started being poured at the same time. To adhere to the plan and meet the tight schedule required by the project, using fastening systems with quick assembly times was essential. 80,000 HBS screws ensured the efficiency of the installation, while the WHT connectors and NINO universal angle brackets enabled precise and quick assembly of the joints between walls and floors. START BAND and GROUND BAND completed the ground connection, preventing the structure from coming into direct contact with the foundation. It is not timber frame but steel framing, a construction technique that is gaining popularity in Europe, where solutions already exist to address the challenges of using steel frames. When it comes to fire, there are no second chances. That’s why designing and installing passive protections is an essential choice for the safety of timber buildings. Limiting the spread of flames, preserving structural stability, and ensuring the time needed for evacuation is not just a regulatory requirement—it’s the very goal of passive fire protection. Italian and European standards, such as the UNI EN 1366, set increasingly strict criteria for assessing the fire resistance of construction components and, consequently, for enhancing their safety performance. Complying with these legal directives means building consciously and responsibly.
