In Memoriam: Dr. Phuc LeHoang
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Phuc LeHoang, an extraordinary man and distinguished Professor and Chair of Ophthalmology at the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital at Pierre et Marie Curie University in Paris, France.
Dr. LeHoang was not only a towering figure in the field of ophthalmology but also a man of exceptional warmth, humor, and kindness. Known for his sharp wit and infectious sense of humor, he had an unparalleled ability to bring lightness and joy to even the most serious of settings. He was not only a brilliant mind but also a sympathetic and approachable colleague and mentor, always eager to share his knowledge and make others feel valued.
His remarkable career began with simultaneous achievements: completing his ophthalmology residency in Paris’s leading departments, earning a Master’s degree in Biochemistry, and obtaining a PhD in Immunology from the Pasteur Institute. In 1985, he was appointed Professor of Ophthalmology, and shortly after, he spent a sabbatical at the National Eye Institute (NIH, Bethesda, USA), collaborating with some of the field’s most respected researchers.
His expertise in ocular inflammation earned him international recognition, and his lectures captivated audiences around the world with a rare combination of scientific brilliance and charm.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, he served as a colonel in the French army, earning the Medal of Voluntary Military Services, and was honored as Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur and Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques.
Dr. LeHoang’s genius, combined with his humor and generosity of spirit, made him a beloved figure in both the medical community and beyond.
He had the rare gift of making everyone around him feel at ease, inspiring admiration not only for his intellect but also for his humanity.
He leaves behind a legacy of innovation, kindness, and joy that will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched during his remarkable journey.
