🇮🇹 Serie A has the highest rate of penalties awarded per game so far this season among the leagues we cover, while the Premier League has the lowest. ⚽️ The number of penalties awarded does not correlate with the number of touches in the opposition box (this is true at the team level as well), suggesting that penalties are mostly random events. 📈 If we compare this data with historical trends in the top 5 leagues, we see that the current rate of penalties conceded in Serie A is the 2nd highest since 2017/18, only lower than 2019/20 Serie A. We can also see that the rate of penalties per game has increased in the Bundesliga and Ligue 1 as well in 2024/25 compared to recent years. On the other hand, the current Premier League season would set a new minimum in the rate of penalties awarded in the past 8 seasons.

Who has been scoring above expectations, and who has a lower tally than they maybe should have so far in 2024/25? ⚽️ Comparing goals and xG in open-play, we see that Haaland is back to his usual strong overperformance (9 goals vs. 4.0 xG) after an uncharacteristic underperforming run last season. Other notable overperformers are Luis Diaz (5 vs. 3.0), Barcola and Perez (both 4 vs. 2.4). On the other hand, Watkins is significantly underperforming his open-play xG (which are the best in the PremierLeague on a P90 basis), and so are Jota, Mbappé and Sørloth.

Who are the top long-range shooters in elite football? To find out, we analyzed all shots taken from outside the penalty box since the 2017/18 season. We excluded shots taken from the wings, using the sides of the penalty box as our reference points. Additionally, we did not include free kicks, as they occur under special conditions. We also left out blocked and deflected shots to ensure our data on shot locations was as accurate as possible, as well as "big chance" situations where the goalkeeper might be out of position. Below is a shot map with information on xG, xGoT (post-shot goal probability based on the shot end location) and Shooting Goals Added (SGA = xGoT - xG, measuring shooting quality), for the top 6 players by conversion rate. The average conversion rate from this sample of >70K shots is 5.6%.
