💡 On 29th September, VVA Group together with Spatial Foresight and LSE Cities hosted a workshop on the #proximityeconomy in the EU. This event is part of an action under the European Commission (DG GROW) and is managed by the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA). The workshop brought together academics and policy experts to exchange ideas to define the #proximityeconomy, identify its value added and the conditions for it to thrive. The first results indicate that the #proximityeconomy: 🌐 cannot be defined without considering both the geographical and relational dimensions of proximity, and how they interact; ❗❗  provides economic, social and environmental value added to its community, but may also generate risks in terms of territorial inequalities; 🤝 emerges thanks to the collective intention of the stakeholders within the ecosystem, but needs to be steered with policy; 🌱 has different features in urban and rural settings, and specific enabling conditions can avoid the creation of silos between them. In the next months, the study team will identify best practices and examples of the #proximityeconomy in the EU, and develop a monitoring framework to measure its performance. If you are interested in the topic or have worked on it, do not hesitate to reach out to us, at n.gorman@vva.it. Stay tuned to know the results of the study! #proximityEU
