Responsibilities

The role of a Technical Editor is crucial in ensuring that technical documentation is accurate, clear, and well-structured. Here are the key responsibilities and requirements for this position:

  • Reviewing and Editing: Technical editors review and edit technical documents to ensure they are free of errors, maintain clarity, and adhere to style guidelines.
  • Collaboration: They work closely with authors and subject matter experts to verify accuracy, update content, and enhance readability.
  • Content Development: Technical editors may also create their own materials, design graphics, and develop web content.
  • Maintaining Documentation: They are responsible for maintaining structured technical documentation, including materials for users, installers, developers, and system administrators.
  • Quality Assurance: Technical editors conduct quality assurance on printed documents, brochures, advertisements, newsletters, and other marketing materials.
  • Website Content: They maintain technical content on the company’s website.

Requirements

  • Education: A bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, applied science, mathematics, engineering, or a related field is typically required. A master’s degree can be advantageous.
  • Experience: Proven experience as a technical writer and familiarity with various style guides.
  • Technical Knowledge: In-depth understanding of technical concepts.
  • Software Skills: Experience with desktop publishing, multimedia production, and online documentation software.
  • Writing Skills: Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and page composition skills.
  • Web Coding: Familiarity with web coding and authoring systems (e.g., HTML or XML).
  • Deadline-Oriented: Ability to adhere to deadlines and handle pressure.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail is essential.

Preferred Requirements

  • Specialized Background: Diploma or degree in a technical-scientific area.
  • Structured Documentation Experience: Proven experience creating structured technical documentation in English (e.g., electronic, telecommunications, IT, or mechanical sectors).
  • XML Tools: Knowledge and use of technical writing XML tools (e.g., Oxygen XML Editor, MadCap Flare XML Editor).
  • DITA Familiarity: Understanding of the DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture) XML standard and information organization principles.
  • Agile Adaptability: Adoption of Agile methodologies to adapt quickly to project changes.
  • PLM Tools: Familiarity with Product Lifecycle Management tools (e.g., Siemens Teamcenter, PTC WindChill).
  • Programming and Database Skills: Knowledge of programming languages, version management tools (e.g., Git), and query languages (preferably Oracle SQL).
