Contrasting images from the #Paris Olympics Games: The organizing committee selling off parts and items from the games as part of the clean up process in #flea markets against TikTok #unboxing videos of Olympians showing off their (what could feel like countless) free swag in gear bag hauls. The #flea markets are part of the Olympics #circular strategy and scheduled across number of cities in France. The aim is to reduce waste and give a second life to items post the games. The Rio 2016 Games produced 17,000+ tonnes of #waste. The #ParisOlympics has had many initiatives to cut down on #waste in an effort to run more #sustainable games. There are wins to celebrate, like this #resale strategy. Or initiatives to reduce #plastic pollution, such as offering reusable cups with a 2-Euro deposit that attendees and athletes could use at water and soda fountains. And prohibiting #single-use plastic bottles at some sites and allowing to bring in #reusable water bottles. But according to #PlasticPolutionCoalition not all initiatives have been as successful as one would hope, like issues in installing water and soda fountains, and reportedly many venues simply emptied beverages from plastic bottles into reusable cups. To continue pushing forward & accelerating the change, we need people, organizers and companies have common (and intertwined) strategies towards the games, including having open source innovations that can collectively help deliver on #sustainability promises at the games and beyond. We also need all partners to have a mentality shift - total reduction of overall products that create waste. The change is really hard, implementing and executing it flawlessly is even harder and requires multiple stakeholders and suppliers coming together. But for now, we should celebrate many exciting things that #ParisOlympics committee was able to achieve.
