𝗫𝗘𝗡𝗢𝗡'𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗼𝘀 It is today the great scientific news that colleagues at the Xenon experiment, hosted by the Gran Sasso Laboratories, have seen the first signal of neutrinos emitted by the sun. I am happy to congratulate them on this achievement! I know many members of that working group, starting with their leader, Elena Aprile. I am glad to have been among those who worked to host Xenon at the Gran Sasso laboratory 20 years ago. For those who, like me, are interested in these funny particles this is undoubtedly good news. I have long studied the possibilities of detecting neutrinos with these detectors. I don't know if it is the same for those working in the field of dark matter, or perhaps this will lead to rethink the intended use of the detectors that have bet on the search for a certain type of dark matter, without so far succeeding in revealing its existence. That reminds me of a story from a few years ago, when I worked as a university professor. At the first faculty meeting after COVID, scheduled to decide on the teaching programmes for the PhD, a colleague, taking advantage of his hierarchical position at the time, imposed the agenda to halve the Introduction to Particle and Neutrino Physics course that I had been teaching for almost 10 years, requiring me to lecture on dark matter with no reason given. Assuming the discussion was between science-conscious people, - I argued that 24 hours for such an introductory course was already the minimum, and that before rushing to talk about things one does not know enough about, a PhD student should be comfortable with the established ones; - I asked this colleague how one could claim to reason about the attempt to solve the problem of strong CP violation without having first recovered the basics; - I repeated to everyone that it was important to introduce neutrino physics, a sure gateway to physics beyond the standard model, a mine of scientific opportunities; - I explained that the problems highlighted by cosmology do not necessarily concern particle physics. I received no response and at this point I realised that some of the participants were already in agreement with this colleague, while the others colleagues, instead of reasoning about the organisation of the PhD, preferred to remain silent. I concluded that the discussion had no scientific character. This was far beyond reasonable and acceptable. Thus while sorry after 8 years of work I immediately resigned ending my experience with this PhD school. I have professional integrity and no intention of abandoning it; moreover I have never liked bullies. Time does not always do justice but I care less about that than about doing my utmost to live up to the ideas and principles I believe in. For example, I think that science and politics are two separate things, which work when the proper spheres of each are respected. .

Prendiamola così, come un'operazione nostalgia. 😀 Oggi (31 gennaio 2025) mi sembra di ritornare indietro nel tempo, a quando, da dottorando, non avevo sempre accesso agli articoli su IEEEXplore... Le ragioni, stavolta, sono diverse: la trattativa tra IEEE e chi rappresenta in qualche modo le università italiane è saltata. In ogni caso, il sistema dell'editoria scientifica dovrà cambiare, non è ammissibile che gli editori incassino (in modo palesemente eccessivo) sfruttando il lavoro degli altri. Tantomeno per un ente (IEEE) che dovrebbe rappresentare i suoi iscritti, e invece li tartassa. Let's take it like this: I'm going back in time, to when as a PhD student, I couldn't access papers on IEEEXplore any time I wanted... This time, the reasons are different: IEEE and Italian university representatives can't close a deal. Anyway, the scientific publishing system must change, it's unacceptable that editors exploit so much others' work. Even more for institutions (like IEEE) that should represent their members, while they seem to squeeze them.
