Erik Brynjolfsson, an economics professor and director of the Stanford Digital Economy Lab at HAI, believes that Generative AI (Gen AI) represents a significant departure from previous technological innovations and could have a faster and more profound impact. Unlike past technologies, Gen AI is easier to implement and can be effectively utilized by workers within hours. The infrastructure developed in recent decades, such as the internet and cloud, enables rapid distribution of generative AI technologies, as seen with ChatGPT reaching 100 million users in just 60 days. Brynjolfsson distinguishes between the first wave of automation focused on physical tasks and the current wave targeting cognitive work automation. He predicts a transformative impact comparable to the industrial revolution as machines autonomously learn to solve problems.
