Tradizione e innovazione: quale occasione migliore per ammirarle assieme?

Angelo Berardino is driving me crazy with his relentless Italian car posts. While everyone (myself included) critiques Stellantis for its shortcomings, it’s worth noting the two competing forces within the mega car company: the push for homogenization and the need to preserve brand identity. Unfortunately, the homogenization effort seems to be winning—and it’s not working. Take the Dodge Hornet as an example. Essentially a rebadged Alfa Romeo Tonale, it’s being sold as an "American" car, and no one is happy. Alfa enthusiasts would rather buy the Tonale to get the badge and the luxury experience, while Dodge fans want a muscular, distinctly American design (reminiscent of the original Hornet) paired with a proper American engine. Instead, what we get is a car that satisfies neither side—and that translates to cars sitting on the lot. Or take another example: a video circulating on X last week, filled with so many expletives it could make a sailor blush, showing an American mechanic battling with an overly complicated Fiat MultiAir engine in a Jeep. Hate to break it to Stellantis, but the last thing Americans want in their Jeeps is an engine that’s impossible to work on under a shade tree (and let’s face it, many already fall into this category). See, this is the rub. Stellantis wants to globalize chassis, engines, electronics, software, and more—but in doing so, they risk losing brand identity. This is clearly the direction they’re heading with the medium and large STLA platforms. [an article I wrote on this—https://lnkd.in/eH2mDqGA]. Here’s the thing: if you’re going to go all-in on this strategy, why not just create a new car line called Stellantis or rebrand one of the existing product lines as the flagship for this new, homogenized approach? A focused rebranding campaign could make the transition more intentional and palatable. As the owner of a 52,000-mile 1976 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce, THAT is what comes to mind when I see the Alfa Romeo badge. Not a crossover blob or some generic electric vehicle—though, to be fair, Alfa could absolutely make an electric supercar or something equally striking. Or, Stellantis could focus on making the Fiat 500e affordable and competitive (because let’s face it, they’re practically having to give them away in the USA right now). Stellantis—please, harness your passion and turn it into profit. Build cars that are exciting, reliable, and ready for any adventure, whether it’s slogging through the woods, hauling lumber, transporting the family, or tearing up the track—and do it at a realistic price point. Then you win. You have the legacy, so tap into it in ways that make sense. #stellantis #homogenization #automotive #brandidentity #globalization
