NOCTUA Landscape Monitoring

NOCTUA is a 30-month project for the development of a pilot commercial space-based service for territorial monitoring. The end-to-end service will collect data from a specifically designed high-resolution synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) satellite, analyze, reprocess, and distribute critical information to institutions and citizens for: 1) The monitoring, preservation, and maintenance of infrastructures (buildings, bridges, dams, etc.) and natural resources (glaciers, mountains, forests, etc.) 2) The prevention and timely intervention in natural disasters 3) The support of local economic activities. A SAR is a radar sensor that produces high-resolution 2D images and 3D reconstructions of landscapes by exploiting the motion of the radar antenna over a target region, unaffected by weather or light conditions. The NOCTUA service features a space segment to collect data, a processing layer to combine and elaborate space/ground-based data, and a cloud-based interface. The 6-member consortium is formed by: D-Orbit (prime contractor): Development of the satellite platform, space segment implementation, flight operations, and data download. Metasensing: Development of the SAR satellite Tre Altamira: Satellite calibration, production of images, data elaboration Beta 80 Group: Development of the cloud platform Fondazione Eucentre: Data integration for risk-scenarios elaboration and interaction with emergency plans IUSS: Commercial applications A commercial end-to-end SAR service will enable innovative applications in sectors like insurance, real estate, precision agriculture, and oil and gas. It will also provide institutions with a complementary data source to integrate with ground sensors and larger, higher performance satellites.
