Minister for Sustainable Economic Development, Deputy for District 3 (St John, St Lawrence, Trinity); Board Director at Brighter Futures

https://lnkd.in/ewsVNhzb Jersey's economy grew significantly last year, with overall growth of 7.3%, far outstripping the UK (0.3%), the EU (0.4%) and Guernsey, which unfortunately saw it's economy shrink by 2%. The vast majority of Jsy's growth cam from banking via higher interest rates and of course, as rates subside, this growth will weaken. However, the number that I am most heartened by is the 0.4% growth in the non-financial services sectors. Construction (5.3%) and transport & storage (12.3%) were among the drivers of this growth and show that Jersey's non-finance economy is heading in the right direction, particularly impressive in the aftermath of covid). Exports of both services and goods grew significantly, which is excellent news and something we want to see increase further. On the downside, I am concerned by the hospitality and agriculture sectors, which saw falls in their GVA contributions and show that for hospitality, covid is still casting a long shadow, whilst agriculture still faces many challenges, not least the changing climate.

  • and this is considerably lower than what our Government of Jersey is proposing to introduce for our Island come 1st April 2025… What ‘targeted measures’ will our Government announce to protect our industry and our visitor economy? We know of the £10m a year for 2 years split over all industries to aid in the impact of the minimum wage rise. However… Will they deliver on creating a differential for all on and off trade alcohol? Will they introduce a small distiller rate in alignment with the small brewer and small cider producer rate? Will they resolve the challenges being caused by our migrant worker permit policies? Will they resolve planning issues causing members problems with housing their staff? Will they choose transportation companies focused on delivering growth for our visitor economy? Will they increase the marketing budget for Visit Jersey? Will they update alcohol licensing, tourism and events laws? Will they start to measure our industry with more appropriate economic measures and set goals based on benefits other than financial? Will all States Members not only read, but agree to supporting the delivery of the new visitor economy strategy? What is the plan?

The Treasury has just announced that from April, the National Minimum Wage for 18-20-year-olds will increase to £10 an hour, an increase of 16%, and the National Living Wage will increase to £12.21 an hour, a 6.7% increase.    This is well above expectations and will add £1.9 billion to the hospitality wage bill. This is unsustainable, if taxes are going to shoot up at the same time.    It's paramount the Budget tomorrow includes targeted measures to support hospitality and the cost burden it is facing.   Read our full reaction: https://lnkd.in/eXA_BFew

📢 Announcement: Leadership Transition at Seymour Hotels After almost three decades of dedicated service as our Managing Director David Seymour will be retiring from the role on 2nd November 2024 whilst retaining his position as Group Chairman. We are grateful for David’s exceptional leadership and vision, which have been instrumental in shaping Seymour Hotels into the trusted brand it is today. David has led the company through significant milestones and has been a driving force behind the company’s growth and success. Responsible for 15% of the Island’s hotel bed stock and employing more than 350 valued team members, his leadership has cemented Seymour Hotels as a trusted name in the Jersey hospitality industry.   Notable highlights of David’s tenure include: •     Overseeing more than £50 million of investment in the Group’s infrastructure over the past 20 years, through continued economic challenges and a dynamic, ever-evolving visitor economy. •    Development of the Merton Hotel from a large guest house into the resort hotel it is today, with the introduction of the Aquadome Leisure Pool and the FlowRider surf machine, unique in the Channel Islands. •     Development of the Merton Suites providing flexible self-catering excellence on the outskirts of St Helier. •     Acquisition of the Greenhills Hotel, establishing it as an award-winning luxury country hotel, consistently recognised by industry – both Trip Advisor no.1 Hotel in Jersey and recognition in the Michelin Guide. •     Steering the Hotel Group through the ordeals of Covid in the Hotel Group’s centenary year. •     Elevating the Pomme d’Or from a 3 to 4-star leading business hotel with numerous accolades including no.1 hotel in St Helier. One of four proud generations of the Seymour Family to welcome HRH King Charles and Queen Camilla for afternoon tea earlier this year. •     Providing vision, guidance and security to more than 350 Seymour staff, whilst navigating changing circumstances in a challenging hospitality market and turbulent economic environment. •     A founder member of the Tourism Shadow Board responsible for the transition from Jersey Tourism to Visit Jersey where, pre-covid, along with fellow Board Directors a growth curve to the Island’s tourism fortunes was re-ignited. We are pleased to announce that David’s son, Matt Seymour, will be stepping into the role of Managing Director. Matthew has been an invaluable part of our team for the past seven years, most recently as Business Development Director, and his passion and dedication to our values and goals make him the ideal person to lead us into the future. He will be supported by our excellent leadership team who collectively take pride in fulfilling the Seymour vision to deliver exceptional experiences and create magical memories. Please join us in thanking David for his outstanding contributions and welcoming Matthew to his new role! #LeadershipTransition #FamilyBusiness #HospitalityIndustry #SeymourHotels
