    As we near the end of #BlackHistoryMonth, we celebrate a true pioneer ✨, Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm (1924-2005), who was not only the first African American woman elected to Congress, but also the first to seek the nomination for U.S president in 1972. Known to her colleagues as “Fighting Shirley”, she was an outspoken advocate for racial and gender equality, introducing more than 50 pieces of legislation supporting women and minorities. In 1977, she became the first Black woman and second woman ever to serve on the powerful House Rules Committee.   Chisholm retired from Congress in 1983, but that did not end her goal of wanting to be a catalyst for change. She went on to a teaching position at Mount Holyoke College and co-founded the National Political Congress of Black Women. #BlackHistoryMonthQuotes #trailblazer #pioneer #politics #ShirleyChisholm
