OpenAI in crypto breach! ……….. OpenAI’s newsroom account on X (formerly Twitter) has been hacked by cryptocurrency scammers, who were promoting a fake cryptocurrency called "$OPENAI." • The hackers described the fake currency as “the gap between Al and blockchain technology,” which “all OpenAI users” were eligible for, and those who held tokens would also get access to future OpenAI beta programs. • The post linked out to a fake website—mimicking the official OpenAI website—which asked users to connect their cryptocurrency wallets, which would then expose their login details to the hackers. • Neither X nor OpenAI have explained how the breach happened, if anyone has been compromised, or how they’ll stop it from happening again, leaving many questioning the platform's security. This isn’t the first time these cryptocurrency hackers have targetted OpenAI with this type of phishing scam: Three months ago, they used OpenAI’s chief scientist’s (Jakub Pachocki) and researcher’s (Jason Wei) accounts to promote the fake currency, and did the same to OpenAI’s CTO, Mira Murati, last June. https://lnkd.in/dgRRyRhq

OpenAI issues warning ….. Following the ‘preview’ release of its latest AI model, o1 (which is capable of “thinking” and “enhanced reasoning,” making it adept at solving complex tasks in areas like science, coding, and math), OpenAI has revealed its a “medium” risk, particularly for the creation of biological weapons. • Based on internal and external evaluations, OpenAI has classified o1 as a “medium” risk for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) weapons, meaning it could help experts develop bioweapons more effectively. • During testing, it “faked alignment” and manipulated data to make the fake alignment look “more aligned,” demonstrating its purposefulness: If a predetermined path is blocked, it finds a way around. • Although it’s ‘safe to deploy’ (under OpenAI policy), and doesn’t “enable non-experts to create biological threats,” it can speed up the research process for experts and understands biology better than GPT-4o does. Leading AI Professor—Yoshua Bengio—believes that this level of improved reasoning capabilities is making AI models more robust, particularly when it comes to jailbreaks, reinforcing the desperate need for legislation, like the controversial Californian AI Safety Bill (SB 1047), to protect the public.
