Day 1 Highlights ⚡ Florian Geier, our Senior Director kicked things off by sharing insights about Antler and highlighting key points for launching a startup in just 10 weeks. After months of online communication during the selection process, the atmosphere was electric as founders finally met in person. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the founder introductions and speed networking. As Jordan Fisher mentioned, when someone shared, “I just quit my job yesterday,” or “I failed and lost all my money,” the room erupted in applause. This admiration and respect for bold failures is a defining feature of our founder community. The drinks celebration after a jam-packed Day 1, which ran overtime due to the heated discussions, saw founders’ faces lit up with excitement. Are you interested in our founder community ? New Aesthetic Medicine Service W/Beauty – Setting a New Standard in Aesthetic Care Our portfolio company, UpToU, is developing a new service, W/Beauty, to address the lack of reliable advice in aesthetic medicine. Even though there is a vast amount of information online, many people still find aesthetic treatments both mentally and financially overwhelming. Users often struggle to tell if the advice they find is genuine or just part of a marketing strategy. W/Beauty was created to solve these problems. The service connects users with experienced professionals from the beauty industry and aesthetic clinics who have a wealth of knowledge from helping clients over the years. These professionals, along with individuals who have personally gone through both successful and unsuccessful treatments, offer honest and transparent consultations based on their own experiences. MAI ARAKI, the founder and CEO of UpToU, met her co-founder Nobutaka Hoshi through Antler Japan Residency 2. After completing the 10-week program, they raised a pre-seed funding round. With over 15 years of experience in the beauty industry, Mai has worked in marketing and PR for both large corporations and startups. She recently spoke at "Advertising Week Asia 2024," one of the world's largest premier marketing and communication events, further strengthening her presence in Japan. Just wrapped up my first Milken Institute summit in Singapore. It’s been an incredibly stimulating few days, with insights from leaders like Ray Dalio, Tony Blair, and top investors from around the world. Here are my 4 key takeaways: 1. *Japan is under-represented!* While Japan was a frequent topic (many global investors are interested), we need more Japanese leaders participating on these global stages. I plan to do my part to strengthen that connection. 2. *Asia is seen as a growth driver, but America is still viewed as the leader.* The U.S. is expected to maintain its dominance in tech, military, and other sectors for decades, regardless of the upcoming presidential election. 3. *Cash is king.* While many are thinking long term (~7-10 years), conversations are moving from IRR to DPI. Investors are prioritizing liquidity, and alternative investments—particularly secondaries—are becoming more relevant. 4. *The value of community.* People are generally kind and willing to help. The power of in-person relationships can’t be overstated, especially when nurtured in beautifully curated settings that foster lasting shared experiences. <3
