We’re thrilled to share that our Continental tire plant in Otrokovice, Czech Republic, has recently produced its 500 millionth tire! 🎉A big milestone for our biggest tire plant in Europe! This achievement highlights the dedication of our team of over 4,700 people there. The 500,000,000th tire was a SportContact 7 – an outstanding tire engineered for highest performance and sporty driving. To celebrate, this special tire was proudly displayed at the entrance of the administrative building, signed by the employees who made it. 🖋️ A fitting tribute to their hard work and passion! At the #Automechanika2024 fair #sustainability was one of the focus topics. We were glad to present and discuss our many different advances in this field. In a panel discussion, Jorge Almeida, our Head of Sustainability Tires, had the opportunity to discuss how sustainability will change tomorrow with Johanna Pütz of The Boston Consulting Group, Xavier Kaufman of The Future is NEUTRAL, and Jan Bambas of Schaeffler. Jorge emphasized that it is important for Continental to consider sustainability from the early design of the product to the end of use, throughout the entire value chain. Safety, performance and sustainability must go hand in hand. As an example, Jorge pointed to the Ultra Contact NXT. Our most sustainable tire in the market. 💚 In the afternoon, Jorge presented how we at Continental Tires work every day to improve energy- and resource efficiency across our entire value chain. Driven by our ambitious goals, in 2023 we saved a total of 150 gigawatt hours of energy. That is as much energy as needed to power 12,500 single-family homes for a year. ⚡ But we are aiming higher: In our Lousado, Portugal tire plant we are already demonstrating that very large tire plants can achieve CO2-neutral production. 🗨️ As Jorge noted: “Buying energy certificates can have a positive effect in the short term. In the long term, however, we must continue reducing the energy intensity of our operations and increasing renewable energy production to further reduce our CO2 emissions.” 🤫 By the way, the Ultra Contact NXT is also built at our Lousado plant. Our new mobility study shows: Autonomous trucks enjoy widespread acceptance, and many people believe they have a good chance of soon becoming a reality. In Germany, 47 percent of respondents believe that driverless trucks are likely in the near future. This expectation is more pronounced in the USA at 62 percent and in China at 92 percent. Many people expect concrete positive effects from this development. However, the mobility study also reveals ongoing skepticism about the safety of heavy commercial vehicles without a person behind the wheel. “We take people’s safety concerns very seriously. The solution with a redundant system demonstrates that the safety and protection of all road users is Continental's top priority when it comes to autonomous driving. Our decades of expertise and the resulting success with technologies for automated driving in the passenger car sector are an incentive and the basis for us to achieve something similar for commercial vehicles and raise confidence in this form of mobility,” said Philipp von Hirschheydt, Executive Board member for the Automotive group sector.
