Portland Aluminum Smelter, Australia, Concludes an Additional Hedge Agreement on Electricity Pricing Summary: Portland aluminum smelter (“Portland”), a joint venture partly owned at a 22.5% investment rate by Marubeni and located in Victoria state, Australia, has reached the conclusion of an additional 287 MW hedge agreement (“Additional Agreement”) on electricity pricing with AGL Energy Limited on September 27, 2024. This follows the 300 MW hedge agreement signed with AGL on August 17, 2023. As with the contract concluded last year, the Additional Agreement will take effect upon the termination of existing contracts with AGL and will facilitate electricity procurement at competitive prices for a period of nine years, from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2035.   Going Forward: Aluminum smelting requires a large amount of electricity, and electricity accounts for about one-third of the total costs associated with smelting. The state of Victoria, Australia, has set a policy to increase the percentage of renewable energy in the region to 65% by 2030 and 95% by 2035, with volatility in the pricing of electricity over this period predicted to increase. The total hedging volume with AGL, including this Additional Agreement, shall meet up to 95% of the maximum electricity demand required for Portland through June 2035. In the additional agreement, a new option has been added to replace up to 30 percent of the contracted volume with a renewable Power Purchase Agreement with AGL. This hedge agreement will provide a solid foundation for Portland’s long-term operations and contribute to a stable supply of aluminum.   Marubeni has made “Green Strategy” one of its fundamental policies to enhance its corporate value in its current Mid-Term Management Strategy “GC2024.” GC2024 positions aluminum as a key component within Marubeni’s green business given its status as an essential material resource in the transition to a decarbonized society. Marubeni will actively endeavor to ensure that responsible production* at Portland contributes to the realization of a sustainable society. *Responsible production: In May 2023, Portland was awarded the ASI Performance Standard certification in recognition of the integrity of its operations and its extensive environmental and safety initiatives. In July 2024, Portland was incorporated into Alcoa Corporation’s “Chain of Custody” certification, which is ASI’s management standard for responsible production, processing, and distribution traceability. Commencement of Joint Operation of an Ammonia Carrier in Partnership with Solvang   Summary: Marubeni has entered into a partnership agreement with Solvang ASA, a Norwegian shipping company, and commenced joint operation of an ammonia carrier “MV Clipper Neptun”. Solvang is a leading player in ammonia seaborne transportation with a 10% share in the global volume of shipments and extensive knowledge and experience in the field. With Marubeni’s participation in the field of transportation of ammonia, a clean energy source for which demand is expected to grow, and through this partnership with Solvang, we will contribute to the stable supply of ammonia around the world.   Going Forward: The Japanese government anticipates that domestic demand for low-carbon fuel ammonia will reach three million tons in 2030 and 30 million tons in 2050, and has set a goal of establishing a domestic and overseas supply chain through Japanese companies of 100 million tons of ammonia by 2050, with the volume of ammonia seaborne transportation set to increase in the near future. Joint Development of a Commercial Carbon Dioxide Storage Project in Southwestern Texas, United States   Summary: Marubeni entered into an agreement to acquire an interest in a business entity funded by Ozona CCS LLC, which is developing a carbon dioxide capture & storage (“CCS”) project in Texas, United States. Through this agreement, Marubeni will participate in and jointly develop the CCS project in southwestern Texas with Ozona, with Marubeni’s investment comprising a 50% stake in the Project.   This Project involves capturing CO2 emitted from multiple gas production and processing plants in southwestern Texas (an area with active exploration and production of oil and gas), transporting it via dedicated pipelines, and storing it in saline aquifers 2 to 3 km underground. It will be a pioneering commercial CCS hub project in the United States. Marubeni has been engaged in the upstream shale oil and gas sector in Texas, and by combining Marubeni’s and Ozona’s development capabilities, including subsurface evaluation in the region as well as infrastructure business and power business, the two companies will develop the Project with the aim of coming to a final investment decision by the first half of 2025 and commencing commercial operations in 2026. Marubeni and Ozona will continue to review other ongoing Ozona projects under development in Texas for potential similar joint development partnerships to expand their businesses.   Going Forward: In February 2022, Marubeni announced its mid-term management strategy GC2024, aiming to become a frontrunner in green business through “strengthening green businesses” and “promoting green transformation across all businesses.” CCS is an essential technology for achieving global carbon neutrality. Marubeni Participates in the “Enhancing Linkages between the Private Sector and Small Producers (ELPS)” Project in Tanzania   Summary： Marubeni has partnered with UCC Ueshima Coffee Co. to jointly invest in the “Enhancing Linkages between the Private Sector and Small Producers (ELPS) Initiative”, the first project funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development with a contribution from the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, to enhance sustainability in the coffee value chain in Tanzania.   Going Forward： Marubeni has been supporting coffee producers in various countries in order to ensure a stable supply of coffee.
