The Arctic Circle Assembly, an international gathering bringing together experts, stakeholders, and policymakers to discuss pressing Arctic issues, began today in Reykjavik, Iceland. As part of the Assembly, SPF arranged two sessions, joined in other panel discussions, and held a range of meetings with experts. To kick off SPF activities for Day 1 of the assembly, SPF Research Fellow Sakiko Hataya alongside SPF Senior Fellow Hiroyuki Enomoto and SPF Senior Fellow Natsuhiko Otsuka participated in a discussion entitled “Achievements of Japan’s Arctic Cooperation.” At the second session arranged by SPF-OPRI, “Arctic to Third Pole: Unified Strategies for Global Sustainability,” Research Fellow Rauniyar Santosh Kumar, Research Fellow Mengyao Zhu, and Special Advisor Hide Sakaguchi presented alongside a panel of experts.

On September 23, RADM (ret.) Katsuya Yamamoto, program director of SPF’s Security Studies Program, participated in the “Indo-Pacific Order and South China Sea Security at a Crossroads” in Taipei, Taiwan, hosted by the National Taiwan University and the Ministry of the Interior. Several experts from a variety of countries including Japan, the United States, Australia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Singapore participated. RADM Yamamoto served as a panelist in the session “Grey Zone Strategies and Regional Stability.”
