While majority of us dream of having the time of our lives with our partners, more often than not it is not the case for persons with #disabilities. This is because beyond the usual acceptance and attitude change between someone with a disability and someone without a disability, physical meet ups present the unseen, unspoken, and many a times unthought of challenges to the person with disability. Hence the long periods of calls, texts, video calls and tedious planning for the first #date. Read more on #accessibletransport and dating for persons with disabilities here: https://lnkd.in/dAyY9uyB

The release of KCSE results marks an important milestone for students across Kenya, including those with disabilities, as they consider their options for tertiary education. However, the transition rates for students with disabilities to higher education remain alarmingly low—only about 12% successfully progress from secondary education to tertiary institutions. This highlights the significant challenges faced by this demographic, with transport accessibility emerging as a critical barrier. Beyond the physical difficulties, there was the issue of being stared at by other children. Some of their looks stemmed from genuine curiosity, but others felt rooted in the prejudices or lack of understanding passed down by their parents. This constant scrutiny was mentally draining and left me feeling exposed. Each stare was a reminder of my perceived “difference,” which chipped away at my confidence and heightened my awareness of being “out of place.” Read more on the psychological impact of inaccessible transport in education here: Beyond the physical difficulties, there was the issue of being stared at by other children. Many schools, especially in rural areas, are miles away from home, making the daily commute difficult and often unsafe for children with disabilities. Without adapted transport solutions, these children face not only logistical hurdles but also societal stigma, which reinforces exclusion. Additionally, during the rainy season, the challenge intensifies. Muddy roads and impassable paths make it nearly impossible for children with disabilities to reach school safely, forcing them to miss classes and fall behind academically. This recurring issue disrupts their learning and perpetuates inequalities in education. We did it!! Our extraordinary team from Ace Mobility , led by our visionary blind co-founder Julius Mbura , the automotive aficionado, and Daniel Gatura has scaled the heights of Mt. Kenya! 🇰🇪 This historic ascent marks the first time a blind Kenyan has reached the summit since the 1960s, a testament to the power of human spirit and the boundless possibilities of #HeightsUnseen. As we prepare to ring in the New Year from the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro, we're filled with immense pride and gratitude. Our journey is not just about conquering mountains; it's about breaking barriers, challenging perceptions, and empowering individuals with visual impairments. Each white cane, a symbol of independence and the power to conquer the unseen, is a beacon of hope. We're committed to distributing 4,000 white canes nationwide, empowering countless individuals to navigate their world with confidence. Let's continue to illuminate the path for a brighter future, where dreams know no limits by supporting this cause by donating on https://lnkd.in/dphuBHXA #Inspiration #DisabilityRights #AdventureAwaits

Still on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities celebratory mood, our communication lead and disability advocate Brian Ndiritu led the IEEE PES Kenya in understanding the meaning and importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in engineering and technology in general. During the sessions, using Ace Mobility as example, Brian emphasized that inclusion benefits everyone, not just persons with #disabilities. He stressed on the need for diversity and equity, as they often lead to innovations and breakthroughs, mostly as a result of understanding the users needs better, and having different ideas to try. IEEE PES Kenya sought to inculcate these values in engineering students as a motivation to always be intentional about others, and in the process, break down systemic barriers that may hinder the full participation of those from marginalized groups. Beyond #disabilityinclusion, Marta Chaltu advised students to embrace collaboration rather than competition between genders and ages, as a means of learning from each other and progressing together. With the world transitioning to #EVs, it is prudent that persons with disabilities are involved in the process, and Ace Mobility is proud to lead the way to show that #inclusivetransport is possible for a better society. After all, the goal is to leave no one behind.

Today, we honor the incredible resilience, talent, and leadership of persons with disabilities. This year's theme, "Leadership Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities," reminds us that the true barrier isn't disability—it's discrimination. At Ace Mobility, we believe in creating an inclusive world where everyone has the opportunity to lead, innovate, and inspire. Together, let's dismantle stereotypes, break down barriers, and champion equal opportunities for all. Disability doesn't define potential—let's create a society that values and uplifts every voice. 💪 #IDPD2024 #LeadershipForAll #InclusivityMatters #BreakingBarriers
