Unlocking the Potential of Kenya's Inland Blue Economy! The first-ever Blue Economy Baseline Survey on Kenya's Inland Waters has been successfully launched! This ground breaking survey, commissioned by the East Africa Research and Innovation Hub and conducted by Africa Centre for Health Environment and Water Services Africa Centre for Health Environment and Water Services (ACHEWS) in collaboration with the Kenya Devolution Programme (KDP) - Timiza Ugatuzi funded by the British High Commission, was the first of its kind, focusing on vital inland waters; Athi River, Lake Victoria, Tana River, Ewaso Ng'iro, Rift Valley, and Kerio Valley.
Dr. Ed Barnett MBE , Deputy British High Commissioner to Kenya, officially unveiled the Blue Economy Baseline Survey. His insightful address emphasized the future of our inland waters and the potential for driving sustainable economic growth while emphasizing on the need for reliable data.
Key Highlights:
🌊 Kenya's inland waters cover 1.9% (11,230 km²) of the country's surface area.
🐟 Produces approximately 150,128 metric tonnes annually, with the potential to grow to 450,000 tons.
📊 Inland fisheries contribute around 0.5% to the national GDP.
👥 Fishing sector supports the livelihood of 37 million people.
💼 Employs over 200,000 people.
