I care about making people and communities healthier, not as a one-off but by changing systems.

Attention academic journal editors! You may have heard that Africa contributes only about 1% of scientific knowledge globally. But did you know that a majority of African academic journals are NOT indexed in the major bibliographic databases? Not being indexed means that scientific outputs in these journal are invisible to most other scientists, contributing to the low "productivity" of African scientists. African Population and Health Research Center is creating the Africa Journal Visibility platform and working with journal editors to identify steps towards indexing (including improving quality). This week at African Population and Health Research Center, we have been taking another step towards strengthening the African research ecosystem. More than 140 participants from 20+ universities in Kenya are attending week-long of parallel workshops at the Kenya School of Government. The workshop aims to address some weakness in the research ecosystem: ✅ (In)visibility of African science and scientists ✅ Weak financial and grant management practices 1) You may have heard that Africa contributes only about 1% of scientific knowledge globally. But did you know that a majority of African academic journals are NOT indexed in the major bibliographic databases? Not being indexed means that scientific outputs in these journal are invisible to most other scientists, contributing to the low "productivity" of African scientists. How do we address that? ✅ We are creating the Africa Journal Visibility platform and this week we are working with journal editors to identify steps towards indexing (including improving quality) 2) A study conducted in 2022 / 23 found that a majority of African universities either don't have functional websites or have outdated websites that are not optimised for visibility. #truestory ✅ We are working with communications teams at these universities to work on strategies to enhance their visibility and promote the research that African scientists do! We are making African science and scientists visible - no more lamps hidden under bushels!! 3) Have you heard of the Good Finance Grant Practice (GFGP) standard? Academic or research institutions need to strengthen their financial and grant management practices *institutions with strong financial systems attract more $$$ ✅ We are training finance managers in the GFGP standard and supporting institutions to get GFGP certified Slowly by slowly we are working to increase the chances of African universities to competitively win research grants that can be put to use to address the most pressing challenges we face on the continent #WeAreAfrica #IamAPHRC

  • In Senegal’s Kaolack and Gossas regions, adolescent girls aged 10-19 face critical challenges such as child marriage and early pregnancy. These barriers not only limit their potential but also contribute to cycles of poverty and inequality. • Today, #IamAPHRC's Generation Health Project held its inception meeting with key stakeholders, including the @MOH_Kenya, Nairobi County Government, and various Civil Society Organizations. The meeting focused on exchanging ideas and charting a clear path for this multi-year project aimed at reducing unhealthy diets and physical inactivity among adolescents (ages 10-19) in Ghana and Kenya. Through the project, the Center seeks to empower youth with the knowledge and tools to adopt healthier behaviors and prevent non-communicable diseases. We were honored to have, among other guests, the Nairobi County Director of Policy, Michael Otieno, and Dr. Michelle Holdsworth from the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development in attendance. #APHRCResearch #WeAreAfrica
